Presbyterian Falls to Buccaneers in Road Clash

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's basketball team (3-21, 1-10 Big South) suffered an 88-62 road defeat at Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 7) at Buccaneer Fieldhouse.

 

The Buccaneers started fast and never looked back, shooting 60 percent from the field in the first half and 55.8 percent for the game. Offensively, Krystal Haddock led PC in points and rebounds, registering 14 points to go along with six boards. Ja'Cia Cunningham and Ore Ogunwolere also scored in double figures for the Blue Hose, scoring 12 and 10 respectively. Ogunwolere drained her eighth three of the season.

 

Yolanda Floyd pitched in five points for the Blue Hose, her most in a Big South game this season. Defensively, Aminata Tal led PC with three steals. Haddock and Ogunwolere each recorded two. Samantha Mullock logged her fourth block of the year. Cunningham led the Blue Hose on the glass, posting seven rebounds. 
 

  

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter

The Buccaneers grabbed control of the game from the opening tip, scoring the first eight points of the afternoon. Mullock and Aminata Tal scored their first baskets of the game in the following minutes, but Charleston Southern took a double-digit lead over the Blue Hose. Ja'Cia Cunningham and Krystal Haddock pitched in baskets to keep PC within striking distance down 20-13 with 80 seconds remaining in the period. However, the Buccaneers answered with three more points to end the first quarter up 23-13.

 


Second Quarter
Charleston Southern started off hot in the second quarter, quickly going up 31-13 two minutes into the period. Slowly, the Blue Hose started to settle in and chip into the lead in the middle of the quarter. The Blue Hose got the deficit to 10 down 35-25 after Ore Ogunwolere poured in her first three of the afternoon. PC had a balanced offensive attack in the first half, but Charleston Southern had the answers. The Buccaneers finished the half on an 11-2 run to grab a 46-27 advantage at the break.

 

 

Third Quarter
Krystal Haddock caught fire for PC to open the second half, making three baskets in the first four minutes of the third. However, the Buccaneers weathered the storm, taking a commanding 60-35 lead halfway through the quarter. Allie Sykes responded with her first three of the contest. Cunningham and Ogunwolere scored in the closing minutes of the period, but Charleston Southern went into the fourth quarter up 68-49.

 

 

Fourth Quarter
Amani Williams made her first basket of the afternoon to start the fourth quarter for the Blue Hose. Yoland Floyd got going for Presbyterian late in the game. She finished the contest with five points (all in the fourth quarter). Haddock poured in the final bucket of the afternoon for PC in the closing seconds, but Charleston Southern cruised to an 88-62 conference win in Charleston.

The Blue Hose will have the week off before hosting Gardner-Webb next Saturday (Feb. 14) at 2:00 p.m. for PC's Black History Month Game.
