CLINTON, S.C. – Blending their most goals in a single match this year with a season-low in turnovers, the Presbyterian College lacrosse team routed New Haven on Sunday afternoon to close out a three-match homestand with a 15-7 victory.
The Blue Hose defense was insurmountable for the majority of the contest, handily getting their first W of the season by allowing just three goals through 53 minutes of action.
Sophomore
Kate Dominick had a multi-score effort for the fourth match in a row with a personal-best four goals (and an assist too), as nine different players on PC's roster hit the back of the net.
The Scotsmen saw at least three makes in every quarter, reaching a lead as large as 11 and scoring eight of the first nine goals in the second half.
Opening the month of March with a one-sided win, PC will play on the road for the first time in over three weeks as they visit Kennesaw State this Wednesday. First draw in Georgia is tabbed for six o'clock.
FINAL SCORE: Presbyterian, 15 – New Haven, 7
RECORDS: Presbyterian (1-3) – New Haven (1-2)
LOCATION: Bailey Memorial Stadium (Clinton, S.C.)
COACH CLAKELEY COMMENTS
"This group has never quit working. They've been challenged early on, but continued to stay in the fight as we navigate through our non-conference schedule. I'm pleased that our team got to see all that work come to fruition today."
NOTABLES
- Defensively, the blue and garnet put forth their best performance of the young season by giving up just one goal in each of the first three periods.
- That's the first time that PC approached the 4
th quarter with three goals or less allowed since April of 2024 (a road triumph over Big South rival Gardner-Webb).
- Senior keeper
Kayleigh Aitken saved seven New Haven shots while also grabbing a team-high four ground balls.
Hannah Savage and
Emma Claire Mills added three ground balls apiece between them.
- Dominick remains PC's points leader (18) after putting in five more on Sunday.
Alyssa Perez and
Emily Currie totaled five strikes (three and two, respectively).
- Presbyterian spread the wealth around in the blowout, gaining 31 shots overall and successfully clearing 14 out of 15 times.
- The Blue Hose made the most out of New Haven's mishaps, cashing in on six out of nine free-position opportunities. They only coughed up the ball nine times altogether.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A New Haven goal with 10 seconds left in the first period prevented the Chargers from being shut out entirely in those first 15 minutes. Perez, Currie, and
Kaylie Rittmueller scored earlier in the quarter to take a two-point lead into the 2
nd.
- The next stanza read exactly like the first: 3-1 Blue Hose. Dominick, Savage, and
Sydney Howard were responsible for those three makes, meaning that PC went into halftime with six scores by six different players.
- Coach Clakeley's crew put the game out of reach in the 3
rd, going on a 5-0 sprint which turned into a 12-3 advantage at the close of that period.
-
Madeleine Lowrance and
Rose Dennstaedt logged back-to-back goals in less than three minutes to give Presby their biggest lead at 14-3. Rookie
Harper Johnson punctuated the win by scoring her first collegiate goal with 10 seconds to go.
