Charalambous’ Shutout Powers Blue Hose Past UNC Asheville 11-0

CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College baseball team (3-17, 1-1 Big South) dominated from start to finish on Saturday afternoon (March 14), cruising to an 11-0 victory over UNC Asheville at the PC Baseball Complex.

 

Christian Charalambous threw a complete game shutout for PC, pitching all nine innings while allowing just four hits and striking out seven. As a team, the Blue Hose delivered their best offensive output of the season, scoring 11 runs on 12 hits to secure PC's first conference victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first, the Blue Hose bats caught fire in the second. Nick Smith singled home Emory Guilford to plate PC's first run of the day. Smith's base knock was the first of five hits in the inning, as the Blue Hose jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

- Brody Linker, Andrew Albertus, and James Green all posted RBI base hits in the second to jump-start the Blue Hose offense.

- Christian Charalambous had his way on the mound with the Bulldogs, striking out four in his first five innings of work to maintain the PC advantage. The Blue Hose struck again in the bottom of the fifth, exploding for five runs to pour it on in Clinton.

- Caden Mason and Guilford delivered RBI singles before Smith smashed a three-run homer to right field, giving the Blue Hose a 9-0 lead over UNC Asheville after five innings.

- Presbyterian kept going in the sixth, scoring two more runs on a Mason two-RBI single up the middle to add to the lead.

- Charalambous continued to make short order of the UNC Asheville lineup the rest of the way, throwing a complete game shutout to help PC secure an 11-0 Big South win.

 

 

NOTABLES 
- Christian Charalambous dominated all afternoon on the mound, allowing just four hits and striking out seven. He threw the first PC complete game shutout since Brian Kehner on March 17, 2017 against Army.

- His nine innings pitched and seven strikeouts are both career-highs.

- Nick Smith turned in the best offensive performance of his career on Saturday, finishing 2-for-4 with a career-high four RBIs. He hit his first home run of the season and the third of his career in the fifth inning.

- This is the third multi-hit game of Smith's career.

- Five different Blue Hose players posted at least two hits: Bo Moody, Caden Mason, Emory Guilford, Smith, and Andrew Albertus.

- Presbyterian tied its season-high this year in runs scored with 11. The Blue Hose also scored 11 in an extra-inning defeat at North Florida on Feb. 28.

- Guilford has logged a hit in five of his past six games.

- James Green has reached base in each of his last six games.

- Albertus recorded a career-high two doubles.
