PC Comes Up Short in First League Outing with Furman

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College lacrosse team peeled the lid off the Big South Conference schedule on Wednesday night against crosstown rival Furman, closing a three-game homestand with a 15-7 defeat.

Unable to slow one of the most consistent offensive units in the division, PC could not wrangle in the lead on a cool evening where the Paladins piled up 34 shots and 30 ground ball pickups.

Despite the loss, Presby can still claim that they are the only school in the Big South to have two players with at least one score in every match. Emily Currie and Alyssa Perez (the two players in question) combined for three goals and four assists.

Head coach Eric Clakeley's squad will have to wait a full week until their second crack at a league opponent, traveling to Mercer on April Fool's Day for a 4:00 start on ESPN+.

FINAL SCORE: Furman, 15 – Presbyterian, 7

RECORDS: Presbyterian (3-7, 0-1) | Furman (5-5, 1-0)

LOCATION: Bailey Memorial Stadium (Clinton, S.C.)

HOW IT HAPPENED

- It was the seventh multi-score performance of the spring by Perez, although Furman distanced themselves with two separate 3-0 runs as well as a third-quarter 5-0 flurry.

- The Paladins turned PC over 24 times as they led wire-to-wire, balancing out a close margin in draw controls (13-11). Those takeaways contributed to eight missed clear attempts by the home side.

- Senior Kayleigh Aitken got the starting nod at keeper and played the first 43 minutes, hauling in nine saves before being relieved by Morgan Thompson.

- Captain Avery West was responsible for three Furman miscues, giving her 19 caused turnovers on the season.

- Currie's three assists are tied for a personal-high (she reached the same stat versus Merrimack as a rookie), while PC found a single goal apiece from Kate Dominick, Sydney Howard, Kaylie Rittmueller, and Perri Mixon.

- Furman utilized a five-goal opening quarter to create some early separation, achieving an 8-3 cushion at halftime as goalie Sam Melville went on to play the full 60 minutes.
