Non-Conference Detour for Softball Against Cougars

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College softball team will open up the month of April with a one-off midweeker back on their home base, entertaining College of Charleston at 3:00 tomorrow.

ESPN+ will be live-streaming the non-conference bout, as Presby gets set for their third opponent from the state of South Carolina this season.

These two schools engaged in a doubleheader at Charleston 12 months ago, where both outings were decided by a single run. The Blue Hose took the first matchup in extra innings by a 4-3 count, as then-junior Peyton Duncan threw a complete game.

PC will look to bounce back from a sweep at the hands of Radford over the weekend, with the finale totaling 21 runs and five homers. It was the highest-scoring Big South game to involve Presbyterian since all the way back in 2019.

SCOUTING THE COUGARS

- Following a school-record 20 conference victories last spring (as a member of the Coastal Athletic Association), Charleston promoted assistant coach Maggie Mrowka over the summer who is now the youngest head coach in all of Division I.

- Although the Cougars are five games below the .500 threshold, they started 7-2 against CAA opponents until getting broomed by UNC Wilmington over the weekend.

- College of Charleston did not score greater than two runs in any of the three games over that series, as they fell to 2-12 in road contests.

- Sophomore Mackenzie Mathis has morphed into Charleston's ace, responsible for nine wins and 73 strikeouts next to a 3.97 ERA. Bronwyn Conroy and Halle Cannon have 15 extra-base hits between them, with the former successfully stealing base 28 times already.

LAST TIME OUT

- Seventeen combined runs were submitted within the first four innings of Saturday's finale between PC and Radford, as the Scotsmen flirted with a six-run comeback thanks to a couple of late home runs by Avery Robinson and Audrey Burton.

- Head coach David Williams' group still has four other Big South series to look forward to as they aim to return to the postseason for the first time since 2022. They are currently 9-7 when playing in Clinton.

- PC's 4.60 staff ERA is the second-lowest in the league (trailing only the defending champion Radford), with Robinson and Duncan adding up for 105 strikeouts.

- In fact, Duncan creeps closer to a couple of career milestones in her final year of eligibility: she needs just two more wins to hit 30 and is just 14 K's shy of 300 total strikeouts.

- Often the first two batters in PC's lineup, freshman infielders Hali Duke and Cierra Grice have logged at least one hit between them in 24 consecutive games. That streak dates back over five weeks (since February 21).
