BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The eighth multi-goal performance of the season by sophomore striker
Emily Currie ended with a euphoric victory for the Presbyterian College lacrosse team on Wednesday night, outgunning Gardner-Webb 10-9 in double overtime.
Logging a game-high five goals (which gives her nine makes in the last two games), Currie slung the game-winner less than a minute into the second OT period. PC did not allow the Runnin' Bulldogs to attempt a single shot in either overtime, coming back from an 8-5 hole at the beginning of the 4
th quarter.
Presbyterian picked a highly-entertaining contest to win their first Big South match of the year, closing on a 5-1 run and outscoring G-W after halftime by a 6-2 margin.
Head coach
Eric Clakeley's group has now defeated the Runnin' Bulldogs in each of their last two trips to Boiling Springs, factoring in a 12-4 decision back in 2024.
Looking to string together back-to-back league wins this weekend, PC will hold Senior Night on Saturday when Longwood comes visiting. Opening draw is scheduled for 5:00 on ESPN+.
FINAL SCORE: Presbyterian, 10 – Gardner-Webb, 9 (2 OT)
RECORDS: Presbyterian (4-9, 1-3) | Gardner-Webb (1-11, 1-2)
LOCATION: Boiling Springs, N.C.
NOTABLES
- This is not the first time in 2026 that Currie has registered a game-winner. She did the same to Manhattan in the non-conference finale last month, hitting with 23 seconds on the clock at Bailey Memorial Stadium.
- Wednesday was the first overtime game to involve Presbyterian since 2020 (Clakeley's first year with the program), a home win against Akron which was coincidentally also settled at 10-9.
- Going back even further, the G-W victory was PC's first
double-overtime showing in a full decade. That was the only other 2-OT game that the program has ever played since joining the Division I ranks in the late 2000's (also in Clinton versus Stetson back in 2016).
- The Scotsmen turned in five goals from five different players between the 10:26 mark of the 3
rd quarter and the end of regulation. They edged out Gardner-Webb in the shots department by 10 and successfully cleared in 21 out of 23 tries.
- Senior keeper
Kayleigh Aitken played the final 39 minutes of Wednesday's barnburner, allowing just three goals in that span and making five saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Currie was a total menace to the Runnin' Bulldog defense, stacking up 11 shots-on-goal (12 overall). It was 17-10 in favor of the Blue Hose in second-half shot attempts.
- Presby forced the home side into 25 turnovers, with four of them
Avery West's doing. She,
Miranda Castilla, and Ella Bobbit each caused a takeaway in the first overtime section.
- PC was a bit slow getting out of the box, trailing 4-1 but battling back to a tie with three straight goals. Gardner-Webb produced the last three scores until intermission, but Aitken and the rest of the Blue Hose defense did not let much get by them after that.
- The visitors pulled to within one with just over 10 minutes to go, thanks to a couple of quickies by
Kate Dominick and freshman
Emmie Gardner (her second goal of the semester).
-
Hannah Savage brought the game to an 8-8 stalemate with a successful free-position swing, but the Runnin' Bulldogs countered to stay ahead with five-and-a-half minutes remaining.
- Sophomore
Madeleine Lowrance sent the game to OT with an ultra-clutch shot at the 1:55 mark of regulation, leaving it up to Currie for the sudden-death dagger.
