BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team (12-43, 8-15 Big South) was able to claw their way back to a 6
th-inning tie in Saturday evening's second matchup with Gardner-Webb, although the end result would favor the Runnin' Bulldogs by an 11-6 final count.
After putting up 14 hits and 11 runs in yesterday's opener, the Blue Hose were unable to clinch the series in Game Two. Sophomore shortstop
Brody Linker laced his first home run of the season near the midway point.
Jeremiah Hampton was tagged with the loss in relief of starter
Christian Charalambous who pitched the first 4.2 innings and struck out six. Gardner-Webb's Colby Putnam entered the game in the 6
th after PC tied things up, throwing the remainder of the contest to get the win.
FINAL SCORE: Gardner-Webb 11, Presbyterian 6
W: Colby Putnam (5-2) |
L: Jeremiah Hampton (2-5)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The home side was able to get off to a quick start in response to Presby's pummeling in the opener, clearing the fence twice with a three-run blast in the 1
st and a solo shot in the 4
th.
- PC started a mid-game rally in the next half-inning, getting on the board with an RBI single from
Cam Mallo. Linker followed suit with a two-run longball to whittle the deficit down to one run.
- A Gardner-Webb RBI double in the bottom of the 5
th would bring the score to 5-3, but the Blue Hose once again maneuvered their way back into the picture with an error-assisted run and Mallo's second RBI of the evening in the 6
th.
- The Runnin' Bulldogs never fully surrendered the lead, however. They'd score the next six runs over the 7
th and 8
th innings to create a hole too large to dig out of.
- After batting in three scores 24 hours earlier, catcher
Layton Hyneman added another in the top of the 9
th to wrangle home Mallo who reached on a walk.
- The Scotsmen threw five arms at G-W on Saturday, with senior Southpaw
Mason McDaniel manufacturing the last five outs.
NOTABLES
- Centerfielder
James Green is now hitting 4-of-8 in this series with a couple of runs scored. Mallo, meanwhile, has reached successfully four times against Webb along with three runs.
- Hitters four through nine in Presbyterian's order each logged at least one hit in the setback, including a Green double and Linker's homer.
- Hyneman was able to throw out four different Gardner-Webb runners that were attempting to steal.
Bo Moody – PC's second-most efficient batter from a statistical standpoint – scored one run after reaching on a hit-by-pitch.
- Charalambous' six strikeouts were one shy of his season-best, which was accomplished in a complete-game shutout over UNC Asheville back on March 14.
