CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Presbyterian College volleyball team (6-4) played two matches on Friday (Sept. 11) at Curry Arena in the Queens Fall Classic.
The Blue Hose were victorious to open the day, defeating Buffalo 25-20, 25-14, 20-25, 25-22 in four sets. Anisa Dorlouis, Emma McHatten, and Celimar Hoyos all posted double-doubles to help the Blue Hose start Friday with a win over the Bulls.
Presbyterian played four tight sets to close out the day against Chattanooga, but the Mocs edged out PC to pick up a narrow four-set 27-25, 29-27, 19-25, 25-19 win.
Emma McHatten closed out the night with a career-high 21 kills.
MATCH ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE – PC 25, BUFFALO 20
- The match began in tight fashion, as neither team could separate from one another in the early going. A kill by Meredith Reisman helped give PC an 11-8 advantage, but Buffalo quickly tied the set right back up at 11.
- Both teams stayed right with one another until late in the frame. PC trailed 15-16 before coming up clutch. The Blue Hose embarked on a 10-4 run to wrap up the opening set, highlighted by three kills down the stretch from Courtney Williams. The Blue Hose claimed a set that featured 13 ties and seven total lead changes.
SET TWO – PC 25, BUFFALO 14
- The Bulls inched ahead of PC early in the second, winning three of the first four points of the set. Presbyterian responded right away, answering with a big run to grab a 10-6 advantage.
- The Blue Hose continued to separate from the Bulls in the middle of the set, going up 19-11 after back-to-back attack errors by Buffalo. PC closed out the set shortly after following kills from Reisman and Emma McHatten, giving the Blue Hose a 2-0 lead over Buffalo to start the day in Charlotte.
SET THREE – BUFFALO 25, PC 20
- Buffalo surged ahead to begin the third set, sprinting out to a 9-3 lead. The Bulls maintained their advantage to go up 15-8 before Presbyterian started to inch closer. Kills by Reisman, Williams, and Julia Yurkovich helped PC close the gap to just three down 18-15.
- Another error by Buffalo closed the PC deficit to just two late in the set, but the Bulls fended off the rally. Buffalo grabbed the third set 25-20 to get on the board.
SET FOUR – PC 25, BUFFALO 13
- The Bulls kept their momentum rolling to start the fourth, once again quickly building a lead. The Blue Hose trailed 8-3 before using a 5-0 run to immediately respond. The Blue Hose flipped the script in the middle of the set, going up 16-13 following three straight attack errors.
- The Bulls rallied back to retake the lead, holding on to a narrow 19-18 lead late in the set. The rest of the frame was tight, but it was Presbyterian that came through in the end. Two kills by Williams and a kill by Yurkovich sealed the win, leading PC to a 3-1 victory over Buffalo.
MATCH ONE NOTABLES
- This was the first ever meeting between the two teams.
- As a team, the Blue Hose hit .230, posting their highest hitting percentage in the month of September.
- Anisa Dorlouis, Celimar Hoyos, and Emma McHatten each recorded a double-double.
- Dorlouis recorded 32 assists and 15 digs, posting her sixth double-double of the year. McHatten logged 14 kills and 10 digs, securing the second of her career. Finally, Hoyos registered 20 digs and 10 assists for her second career double-double.
- McHatten and Courtney Williams led the Blue Hose with 14 kills apiece. Williams powered PC with a .433 hitting percentage.
- Meredith Reisman had a huge day up front, registering six blocks. Williams added four as well.
MATCH TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE – CHATTANOOGA 27, PC 25
- Chattanooga started strong to begin the evening, claiming the first three points of the match. The Blue Hose stayed with the Mocs early, never trailing by more than four. Down 13-9, Presbyterian began to chip away at the lead in the middle of the set, as the Mocs maintained a narrow advantage.
- PC finally broke through to go up 19-18 late in the frame, but Chattanooga took the lead back and created a set point chance up 24-23. A kill by Yurkovich saved the set point. However, the Mocs responded to take a 1-0 lead.
SET TWO – CHATTANOOGA 29, PC 27
- The second set was once again a nail-biter that came down to the very end. Presbyterian jumped out to the early lead in the frame, going up 9-4 after a kill by Daphnis. PC held on its lead in the middle of the set, going up 20-14 after a kill by Williams.
- Chattanooga came all the way back late in the set, using an 8-2 run to tie the set at 22. Both teams had set points, but it was Chattanooga again that broke though. The Mocs won on their second set point to claim another narrow set.
SET THREE – PC 25, CHATTANOOGA 19
- After two tight sets, Presbyterian separated from Chattanooga in the third frame. The Blue Hose took a 5-3 lead early and extended the lead to nine on back-to-back kills by Williams.
- PC kept its pedal on the gas to go up double digits after a block by Dorlouis and a service ace from Amaris Alvarez. Chattanooga made one more push, but a kill from McHatten secured the third set for the Blue Hose.
SET FOUR – CHATTANOOGA 25, PC 19
- Presbyterian picked up where it left off in the fourth, building a 7-4 lead highlighted by a kill from Daphnis. McHatten powered the Blue Hose in the middle of the set, helping PC grab a 14-9 lead.
- However, Chattanooga controlled the proceedings the rest of the way. The Mocs used a 13-3 run to finish out the match, clinching a 3-1 victory on Friday night.
MATCH TWO NOTABLES
- This was the third meeting between the two teams in PC's DI era.
- Emma McHatten delivered a career-best performance, recording a career-high 21 kills. She also logged 12 digs to secure her third double-double of the year (and second of the day).
- Anisa Dorlouis posted her second double-double of the day as well, registering 38 assists and 15 digs.
- Celimar Hoyos led Presbyterian defensively with 19 digs.
- Dorlouis led the Blue Hose with three blocks. Brittney Daphnis and Meredtih Reisman added two as well.
