Hopkins Gets Double-Double In Loss

KENNESAW, Ga.- Sharie Hopkins recorded a double-double with 15 points and snatched 15 rebounds to lead Presbyterian College, despite losing at Kennesaw State by a 86-66 final. Presbyterian College will now look to the six-game road trip to find its first victory as the team falls to 0-4 on the season.

Hopkins, along with Kristin Kidd, reached double digits in scoring as the two shared game-high honors with 15 against the Owls. Senior Amy Jones added nine points and eight rebounds, while the backcourt of Jones and freshman Katlin Moore each dished out four assists.

The Owls opened the second half strong, outscoring the Lady Blue Hose with a 12-5 run, that opened up a 55-45 advantage just 8:29 into the half. The lead bounced within nine and eleven points before a 7-0 run that was highlighted by two points from Gia Lockett and Greteya Kelley opened the lead to 66-49.

Led by 22 points from Gia Lockett, including 17 in the second frame, the Owls finished out the game by scoring 20 points in the paint. The Owls (2-1) bench added 25 points, as KSU shot 36.8% in the half. The biggest difference for each team came from the foul line, as PC converted 23-of-46 attempts, while Kennesaw State hit on 16-of-21.

Scoring the most first-half points since the move to Division I, Presbyterian College trailed Kennesaw State 43-37 at the break. The Lady Blue Hose were led by Sharie Hopkins as the junior forward came off the bench to hit on 5-of-7 shots for 13 points. Defensively Hopkins grabbed six boards which was also a halftime high. The other story of the first half was the game of Kristin Kidd, who dropped 10 points against the Owls including two three-pointers, putting PC at 50% shooting for first-half field goals.

After five quick points, including a three-pointer by Kidd, KSU opened up a seven-point advantage at 18-11 with 12:42 remaining in the half. Katlin Moore and Hopkins responded with two key layups to keep the Owls lead within seven at 22-15. Moore teamed up with Kidd to cut the lead to three with back-to-back jumpers.

The Owls put together a run that pushed their advantage to 38-30, which would eventaully reach 10 after a Gia Lockett 3-pointer. Hopkins scored five of the final six points over the last 1:58 of the half, Tishe Sanders contributing a free-throw for the remaining point, as PC closed out the half on a 6-2 run.

  • Sharie Hopkins now has back-to-back double-doubles with 13 pts., 16 rebounds against Buffalo and 15 points, 10 boards against the Owls.

  • PC shot 50% in the first half for the first time in the move to Division I.

  • This marks the second meeting of the two schools, with Kennesaw State winning a previous meeting (61-59) in 2002.
