ROCK HILL, S.C. ? Presbyterian College's offense was held to one shot in 90 minutes of action as the women's soccer team fell to Winthrop 3-0 on Saturday evening at Eagle Field.
Winthrop's (5-8-0, 1-3-0 Big South) offense came out swinging as a corner kick in the fourth minute of the first half led to a shot by Rachel Webster and junior goalkeeper Abby Young's (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) first of four saves on the evening.
PC (3-8-1, 1-3-1 Big South) had a close call in the 23rd minute of action when the play forced Young out of the box as an opponent approached the net. The Blue Hose defense stepped in and blocked the shot by Courtney Durbin to keep the score tied at zero.
The defense held strong as Winthrop took the ball up the field twice over the next seven minutes, forcing the Eagles offsides on both occasions.
Winthrop broke through in the 38th minute to score its first goal the first goal of the evening. Christine Isabella passed the ball to Ann Lutzenkirchen who shot it from 25 yards out to net her third goal of the season.
The Eagles widened their lead in the first minute of the second half as Erin Foote scored off a deflected save by Young to put Winthrop up 2-0. The Blue Hose retaliated and senior forward Lytle Cannon (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg) threatened to score exactly one minute later, but her shot went wide to the right.
Minutes later, PC faced three shots from Winthrop in a three-minute span as Young made her fourth save of the evening against a shot by Kathleen Pollard. In the 64th minute, Pollard brought the ball up the field and passed it to Foote who faked out Young before driving it to Courtney Durbin on the left side of the net for the third and final score of the evening.
Freshman Sarah Beth Anderson (Grayson, Ga./Grayson) relieved Young for the final 21 minutes of the second half. Anderson made two saves in the 74th and 90th minutes to end the game with a 3-0 loss.
PC returns home for a Wednesday afternoon matchup with High Point at 4 p.m. at Martin Stadium.
