WEST
POINT, N.Y. ? Despite winter storm warnings, Presbyterian College's women's
basketball team made the trek to West Point, N.Y. to take on the Black Knights
of the United States Military Academy. PC fell to Army 66-33 in Christl Arena
on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman
forward Brittany Brown (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) was PC's high-scorer,
scoring 11 points for the second straight game. Brown shot 4-of-9 from the
floor and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line.
Army's
(6-5) defense held the Blue Hose to a season-low 25.5 field goal percentage while
shooting 43.5 percent. PC remained strong from the charity stripe, shooting
87.5 percent (7-of-8), while the Black Knights made only 57.9 percent of their
shots from the line (11-of-19).
PC
(2-8) fell behind in the first half before sophomore guard Amanda Mills (Oregon
City, Ore./San Diego Mesa CC) sank two shots from beyond the arc less than a
minute apart to give the Blue Hose a 9-8 advantage with 13:25 remaining in the
first half. Army went on an 18-0 tear over the next nine minutes to give the
Black Knights a comfortable 16-point lead.
Sophomore
point guard Katlin Moore (Fort Mill, S.C./Charlotte Catholic (N.C.)) ended PC's
scoring drought with a three-point play consisting of a jumper and free throw
shot at the 3:37 mark. Moore added two more baskets to end the half on a
seven-point run, pulling the Blue Hose within 12 points at halftime (28-16).
PC's
struggles continued as Army extended its lead to 29 points in the first seven
minutes of the second half. Brown drilled a shot off a pass from Moore and drew
the foul to turn it into a three-point play. Ten seconds later she followed it
up by drawing a foul by Army's leading scorer and made both shots from the line
to cut the lead to 26 points with 11:49 left in the game.
Brown
maintained her momentum as freshman Kristen Stevens (Pickerington,
Ohio/Pickerington Central) rebounded her own shot and fed the ball to the
Charlotte, N.C. native who made the layup to score her seventh of nine
second-half points.
PC
strengthened its defense at halftime, recording two blocks and five steals in
the second half. The Blue Hose cut their turnovers dramatically from 13 in the
first half to seven in the second, while Army nearly doubled its six first-half
turnovers in the second period. Brown and Stevens each pulled down five boards
to lead PC. The Blue Hose were unable to overcome the scoring deficit, however,
and the Black Knights walked away with the victory.
The
women will take almost two weeks off for the holidays before they return to
Templeton Center for their Big South Conference opener on Jan. 3 against
Winthrop.
