PC-ASU Box Score
BOONE, N.C. ? Presbyterian College's Terrance Butler finished with 12 catches for 164 yards, but it was not enough as the Blue Hose could not hold off the third-ranked Mountaineers in the second half in Appalachian State's 48-14 victory over the Blue Hose on Saturday evening at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
Butler (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Socastee), who had one touchdown reception in the game, now has finished three games in his career with over 150 yards receiving. His career-best was the 215 yards he picked up in PC's homecoming victory over North Greenville in 2007.
All of Butler's 12 catches in the game came from the arm of PC quarterback Tim Webb (Lugoff, S.C./Lugoff-Elgin), who concluded the game Saturday with 327 yards passing.
Webb's 372 yards passing in the game give him four games in his career now with over 300 yards passing.
Webb passed the football 57 times in the contest, completing 35 of his passes. The 57 pass attempts by Webb in the game bested his own Big South record of 56 set in the Wofford game earlier this season. Webb was two off of his Big South completions record of 37 set in the same Wofford game.
Freshman defensive back Justin Bethel (Blythewood, S.C./Blythewood) led the Blue Hose defense in the game, ending his night with a career-best 10 tackles. The 10 stops included a career-high seven solo stops. Bethel now has 25 tackles in PC's last three outings.
Senior middle linebacker Antwan Thomas (Hawkinsville, Ga./Hawkinsville) was just behind Bethel in total tackles in the game with nine. Thomas' nine tackles in the game led to him eclipsing the 300 tackle plateau for his career. He now has 303.
Running back Devin Radford of Appalachian State was the catalyst for the Mountaineer victory. Radford ended his evening with 179 net yards rushing, which included two touchdown runs.
Appalachian State's Jacque Roman led all defensive players in the game with 12 total tackles.
The Mountaineers claimed the opening toss and decided to defer to the second half. The Blue Hose took advantage of Appalachian State's decision by scoring on its opening series.
Sophomore wide receiver Tyler Robbins (Homewood, Ala./Homewood) placed the Blue Hose in prime position for the score when he returned the opening kickoff 56 yards. The 56 yard return was a career-best for Robbins.
The Blue Hose scored seven plays later to go on top 7-0. Chetyuane Reeder (Clinton, S.C./Clinton) acquired the game's opening touchdown when he scored from one yard out for PC with 13:07 left in the first quarter.
The touchdown by Reeder on PC's first offensive possession marked the third time in 2008 that PC had opened a contest by scoring the first points of a game. The Blue Hose also scored first in the Wofford (8/30) and Fayetteville State (9/6) games.
The Mountaineers wasted no time tying the game on its first offensive possession. Robert Welton scored the game-tying touchdown when he rushed in from three yards out to tie the game at 7-7 with 11:19 left in the first quarter after Jason Vitaris' extra point went through the uprights.
The first quarter ended with the two teams even at 7-7. Appalachian State had the chance to go ahead 10-7, but Vitaris missed a 27-yard field goal attempt.
Appalachian State obtained its first lead of the contest at 14-7 with 14:04 left in the second quarter when Edwards somehow eluded the grasp of PC's Adam McKinney (Augusta, Ga./Augusta Christian) and then found Devin Radford for a 72-yard touchdown reception.
Shortly thereafter, Webb was intercepted by Appalachian State's Cortez Gilbert on PC's next possession. The interception led to a 17-7 Mountaineer lead after a Vitaris 37-yard field goal.
The Blue Hose cut the lead to three points going into halftime when Webb found Butler on a bullet pass up the middle for a 31-yard touchdown. Cam Miller's (Lyman, S.C./Byrnes) extra point left the score at 17-14 in favor of the Mountaineers entering intermission.
The Mountaineers scored all 31 points in the second half to take the 48-14 victory.
The Blue Hose next return home to face off against the Crusaders of North Greenville University at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Bailey Memorial Stadium. The Crusaders will serve as PC's homecoming opponent for the second consecutive season.
