HIGH POINT, N.C. - The Presbyterian College men's soccer team tied the contest late in
regulation and neither team could muster the golden goal in the first overtime
session, but High Point tallied a late goal for the 2-1
victory.
PC now stands at 2-8-1 on the season and 1-3-1 in Big South Conference play. High Point is now 7-4-0 on the year and 2-1-1 against conference competition.
The first half saw each team attempt multiple shots but neither squad could
connect. PC took to the offensive, rifling eight attempts, five of which were
on goal. However, Michael Chesler turned away each of the shots.
James Neal was just as effective as his counterpart, stuffing three shots on
goal. HPU notched three other shots that were not near the intended target.
The teams
went into the intermission scoreless.
In the
second stanza, the contest became more physical as the teams accounted for 13
total fouls, nine of which occurred by the home team.
Things got a bit physical in the final half as the Panthers were issued three
yellow cards compared to one for PC.
After two
quick yellow cards in the first 20 minutes of the half, the Panthers used their
aggressive style, netting the contest's first goal in the 70th minute.
Head coach Bret Boulware's team would not give up. Despite having a few chances
in the following minutes that did not find the back of the net, the team
persisted.
It finally paid off when Michael Czulinski rocketed a hard shot from the top of
the box past Michael Chester, tying the game at 1-1. The ball
bounced out to Czulinski on an ill-fated attempt to clear the ball. Czulinski
struck the ball into the upper right corner for the score.
Although neither team scored in the first overtime, the Blue Hose had a chance
to win it in the second overtime session. In the 104st minute, Lewis Makin got
behind the Panthers' back-line for a one-on-one attempt, but the sophomore
keeper stopped the hard shot to preserve the tie.
Two minutes later, Shawn Sloan ended the match with his second goal of the
season.
The Panthers out-shot PC 19-15.
The Blue Hose return to action Friday when they head to Liberty for a 6 p.m. match.
