Clinton, S.C. - Brittney Horton's 88th minute
goal forced overtime but Presbyterian College women's soccer fell, 2-1 to High
Point in double-overtime. The Blue Hose
fell to 3-12-1 (0-7-1 Big South) in a match where PC had more quality scoring
opportunities. The Panthers of High
Point improve to 5-13-1 on the season and 4-3-1 in the league.
"Tough loss tonight in a match that we played well enough to
win," said head coach Brian Purcell. "Everyone
that played contributed for us. I'm
pleased with the effort but disappointed that they didn't get a win in a match
we deserved to win."
The Panthers went up 1-0 when Sara Rager converted on a
penalty kick low and to the left in the 62nd minute. It was her first goal of the season and was
the PC's second corner kick goal conceded this season.
When defeat in
regulation looked to be the likely outcome, Horton scored her second goal of
the season from inside the six yard box.
Stephanie Aaron was credited with the assist to cross the ball into the
penalty area. The equalizer came in the
88th minute and sent the match into golden goal overtime play.
After a scoreless but exciting first overtime period, High
Point was able to post the winning goal in the second overtime session. Janay Whittaker's shot clanged the crossbar
and bounced down and across the goal line.
Her third goal of the season ended the match with 6:39 remaining in the
second overtime period.
Abby Young started the match in goal for the Blue Hose and
worked the first 45 minutes making one save and keeping the Panthers off the
scoresheet. Sarah Beth Anderson relieved
the senior at halftime and worked the final 58:21 making six saves while
allowing two goals.
The season finale for the Blue Hose will kick off at 2 p.m.
on Sunday afternoon against Liberty.
Prior to the match, PC will honor seniors Rachel Lamb, Tricia Bryan,
Britney Horton and Abby Young.
