LAS VEGAS, Nev. -
Presbyterian College outscored Southern by 10 points in the second half and
overcame a 14-point deficit en route to a 71-69 come-from-behind victory at the
Las Vegas Invitational Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Hose are now 1-5 on the season while Southern remains winless at 0-6.
Chase
Holmes led the way with 22 points and seven rebounds in the final round of the
tournament. Holmes canned seven-of-11 from the floor and eight-of-nine from the
charity stripe. Jake Troyli added 18 points and six boards for the Blue Hose
while Travis Smith drained 15 points, dished out nine assists and tallied two
steals.
Southern
came out firing in the second half with two quick baskets and a pair of free
throws, but PC answered with two buckets of its own to keep the score at 45-35 in favor of the Jaguars with 15:45 left in the game.
After PC cut the lead to six, Southern
would take as much as a nine point lead in the next minutes before Smith's two
three pointers and an old fashioned three-point play from Troyli cut Southern's
lead to 61-57 with 6:35 remaining.
Down by four, the PC defense would again
come up big, forcing a turnover and converting it into a three-point basket by
Troyli to trail by only one, 61-60. After rebounding missed shot by Southern
Smith hit the front end of a one-and-one to tie the score at 61. The Blue Hose
offensive rebound on the missed charity toss led to a pair of free throws by
Holmes to give PC a 63-61 lead with under five minutes left.
After a Southern basket and down by one
point with 2:24 remaining, Khalid Mutakabbir drove
the lane and hit a lay-up to regain the lead for PC. Fouled, he missed the free
throw but the Blue Hose were able to hold Southern and Smith again hit a key
jumper to extend PC's lead to 67-64 at the 1:31 mark.
Southern missed the second of two free
throws and PC grabbed the rebound with 20 seconds remaining. A foul sent Holmes
to the line with the score 67-65. He made the first and missed the second, but
Troyli found the rebound and was sent to the line. Making both, he gave PC a
70-65 lead and Southern drove to hit a lay-up cutting the lead to three. Troyli
was again fouled on the inbounds and made one of two, but it was enough for PC
as Southern's ensuing two point basket wasn't enough and the Blue Hose came
away with the 71-69 victory.
Southern
opened up the game with a three-point basket at 18:50, and four minutes into the game the
Jaguars held an early 10-6 lead. The Blue Hose would take two free throws and a
jumper by Holmes to pull the score to 17-12 with 11:08 remaining in the half.
With Southern pressing, PC would score two
quick baskets from Troyli and Holmes to cut the Jaguars lead to three points at
24-21. At the 4:56 mark the Blue Hose defense forced
two consecutive turnovers, each leading to a fast break lay-up for Holmes and
Mutakabbir to give PC its first lead of the game, 27-26.
The Jaguars retook the lead the next time
down the floor, but coming out of a timeout PC scored on the well executed
inbounds play, making the score 29-28 in favor of the Blue Hose. Southern,
however, would respond with an 8-2 run, eventually taking a 39-31 lead into the
locker room at the intermission.
PC will
host Montreat Monday evening at 7 p.m. in its home opener.
