ROCK HILL, S.C. ? Presbyterian College women's basketball shot 40.5 percent from the floor but it was not enough to keep up with hot-shooting Winthrop who hit 54.9 percent of its shots on its way to a 77-48 victory in Winthrop Coliseum on Saturday evening.
Junior forward Lea Smith (Marion, N.C./McDowell) was PC's leading scorer with a game-high 12 points. She also led the Blue Hose on the glass, tying sophomore point guard Katlin Moore (Fort Mill, S.C./Charlotte Catholic (N.C.)) with five rebounds.
PC got off to a rocky start in the first half, down 29-4 with 4:14 remaining. Sophomore guard Amanda Mills (Oregon City, Ore./San Diego Mesa CC) ended a seven-minute scoring drought for PC with two free throws. The Blue Hose scored 10 points over the next two minutes to narrow the gap and end the half with a 33-14 Eagles lead.
PC came out of the locker room ready to continue the momentum they had started before halftime. The team scored a quick five points off a three-pointer by Moore and two baskets from stripe by Smith to reduce Winthrop's lead to 16.
