CLINTON, S.C. ? Five Presbyterian College student-athletes each tallied one
goal, but it was not enough for the Blue Hose Friday afternoon as the women's
lacrosse team dropped a 21-5 decision to Marist.
The Blue Hose now stand at 1-8 on the season.
Jordan Newberry, Kirstin Stenoien, Laura Meade, Brittni Dulaney and Jenna
Handshoe each notched a score for head coach Kristina Llanes' team.
Meade also chipped in a team-best four ground balls while Jill Parker had an
outstanding defensive effort. Parker grabbed three draw controls, forced three
turnovers and scooped up a pair of ground balls in the losing effort.
Erin
McBurnette and Susan England each saw almost equal time in the cage. McBurnette
had six saves while England stopped 10.
Stephanie
Garland paced Marist with a match-high five goals while Cristin Begley had four
goals and three assists. Kelsey Thoms played all 60 minutes in goal to earn the
win.
After a
slow start in the first half, the Blue Hose picked up the intensity in the
final 30 minutes of play. Marist scored the first goal of the second half at
the 27:46 mark, but Meade answered right back with a goal of her own with 25:55
to play.
With just under 19 minutes of action remaining, Newberry made a beautiful fake
before turning and firing past Thoms for the score.
A foul with 14:37 to play allowed Dulaney to take a free position shot ? and
she calmly faked out Thoms before driving home the goal.
Down 21-4
with just over two minutes to play, Handshoe kept her scoring streak alive by
ripping a shot past the Marist defense while closing out the scoring for the
day.
In the
first half, the visitors opened the game with a goal just 47 seconds in by
Begley. She then canned her second score of the day 40 seconds later. Marist
continued the offensive show, outscoring PC 13-1 in the first 30 minutes of play.
The
short-handed Blue Hose got on the scoreboard with 15:11 to play in the first stanza when
Stenoien notched a goal.
Marist
out-shot the home team 42-13, with the first half being in favor of the team
26-4. The Blue Hose picked up 16 ground balls.
