CLINTON, S.C. ? The
Presbyterian College women's tennis team was on the verge of winning its
first-ever Big South Conference match Tuesday evening, but the team came up
just short in the 5-2 loss to UNC Asheville.
The Blue Hose now stand at 2-11 on the year and are 0-4 in conference play.
Rookie Paige Oelke and Virginia Waldron each picked up impressive wins, but the
Blue Hose came up just short in two other matches.
Oelke, playing as the fifth seed, lost her first set 3-6 before rebounding to
knock off Louise Bottomley 6-4, 10-8 over the final two sets.
Waldron, the No. 6 student-athlete, took down Tania Mateva by straight set
scores 6-1, 7-6.
Top-seeded Abby Diminich lost the first set 6-3 to Leslie Smith. However,
Diminich regained her composure to shut down Smith in set two, 6-2. Despite her
best effort, Diminich was unable to win the third set, falling 6-2.
Heather Isbell, who played the No. 2 spot, won the first set 6-2 over Stephanie
Schon but dropped the second two 6-3, 6-4.
Megan Davis
lost her match-up 6-1, 6-0 to Devon Cavanaugh as the No. 3 player while Cara
Caruso lost by identical 6-4 scores to Nicole Schon.
PC was defeated in all three doubles matches. The closest competition came at
No. 3 when Caruso/Waldron fell to Nicole Schon/Tania Mateva by an 8-5 count.
Oelke and Isbell lost to Bottomley and Cavanaugh at No. 2 by an 8-4 score while
Davis and Diminich fell to Smith and Stephanie Schon 8-2.
The women's
tennis team returns to action Saturday when they travel to East Carolina for a 2 p.m. match.
