DETROIT, Mich. ? The
Presbyterian College women's lacrosse team was unable to complete the
second-half comeback, falling by a 21-15 score at Detroit Mercy Saturday
afternoon.
The Blue Hose fall to 1-9 on the season while Detroit Mercy improves to 4-5.
Leading the
way for head coach Kristina Llanes' team was junior midfielder Brittni Dulaney.
She posted a team-best seven points on five goals and two assists. Rookie Laura
Meade tallied five points on four goals and an assists.
Fellow
first-year student-athlete Kirstin Stenoien notched four goals. Junior Jordan
Newberry chipped in four points on two goals and two assists. Jenna Handshoe
was unable to convert on any of her four shots, but dished out a team-best
three assists.
Handshoe
and Newberry accounted for eight ground balls (four apiece). Jill Parker and
Dulaney each had three while Megan Woodis and Susan England each scooped up
two.
Parker,
Newberry and Stenoien each won two draw controls. Erin McBurnette caused a team-high
two turnovers. Parker, Anne Lamb Crosby and Meade all forced a turnover.
McBurnette
played 30 minutes in goal, stopping eight shots. England had three saves in 30 minutes of
play.
Detroit
Mercy jumped on top 3-0 just 1:08 into the match, but Llanes' team
fought right back to make it a good match. Dulaney rattled off back-to-back
goals in a span of 56 seconds, pulling the Blue Hose within one, 3-2, with
25:42 to go in the half.
Meade
knotted the score at the 24:44 mark after slicing through the defense for the
shot. After the home team took a 4-3 lead with just under 23 minutes to go in
the half, the Blue Hose evened the contest at 20:19. Handshoe connected with Meade, who
rocketed a shot into the back of the net, tying the score at four apiece.
PC grabbed
a 5-4 lead when Stenoien converted a free position shot at the 16:52 mark.
However, it
marked the last time the Blue Hose would find the back of the net for nearly 10
minutes. During that time, the host school ran off seven straight goals.
Stenoien,
Meade and Dulaney all tallied another goal in the first half to make the score
14-7 in favor of Detroit Mercy at the break.
In the
second half, Llanes' squad played even with UDM, with each team scoring seven
times.
Meade took
Newberry's pass and promptly put it past UDM's keeper at the 27:52 mark.
Handshoe connected with Stenoien less than a minute later to make the score
16-10.
The home
school tacked on two quick scores before Stenoien answered the bell off
Dulaney's pass, putting the score at 18-11. After UDM went up eight, Dulaney
hit a free position shot and Newberry found the back of the net after receiving
a pass from Handshoe at 22:15.
Detroit
Mercy answered with a goal at 21:23, marking the last time either team
would score for nearly eight minutes. After UDM scored its 21st goal
of the day with just under 14 minutes to go, Dulaney scored at 11:15. The last goal of the afternoon
came when Meade found Newberry at the 5:56 mark, making the score 21-15.
PC returns
to action tomorrow at 11 a.m., against Fresno State in a neutral site affair.
