DETROIT, Mich. ? The Presbyterian College women's
lacrosse team posted its most impressive victory since in Division I, earning
an 18-8 win over Fresno State Sunday in a neutral site affair.
The Blue Hose improve to 2-9 on the season while the Bulldogs fall to 0-8.
The 18
goals scored marked the most tallied in a single match. The 10 goal margin of
victory was the largest ever in the program while the 24 points also marked the
most points scored in a single match.
Leading the
way for head coach Kristina Llanes' team was Jenna Handshoe. Handshoe had a
game-high seven points on two goals and five assists. Brittni Dulaney notched
six points on five goals and an assist while Jordan Newberry accounted for five
goals.
Laura Meade
had three scores while Marie-Lisette Dimitrew scored twice. Kirstin Stenoien
also chipped in a goal in the win.
Dulaney
grabbed a team-best four draw controls while Dimitrew led the way with four
ground balls. Megan Woodis, Meade and Handshoe all scooped up three ground
balls in the victory.
Defensively,
Meade and Dulaney each accounted for two caused turnovers while Susan England
had five saves to go along with two ground balls.
After a
tight first half that saw the Blue Hose hold a 7-5 halftime advantage, the
squad came out and scored five goals in just under six minutes of play to
essentially put the match out of reach.
Things did
not start out well for PC as Fresno State scored the first two goals of the
contest. The Blue Hose got on the board at the 25:05 mark when Newberry found
the back of the net. Less than a minute later, Dulaney was fouled and quickly
converted her free position shot to knot the score at 2-2.
Both teams
stepped up defensively over the next couple of minutes, but Handshoe found
Stenoien with 21:53 to go, putting Llanes' team up 3-2.
After the
Bulldogs tied the match, Newberry regained the lead for PC at with just over 14
minutes to go before intermission. However, Fresno State quickly answered less than a minute
later. With 6:10 to go, Dimitrew's goal gave the designated visitors a 5-4
lead. Newberry and Handshoe each tallied a goal in the closing minutes to take
a 7-5 lead into intermission.
The Blue
Hose ran the offense to perfection in the second half, scoring a season-best 11
goals in the final 30 minutes.
Fresno State scored a goal at the 22:39 mark to cut the deficit to six,
12-6, PC made sure to put the contest out of reach over the next 12 minutes of
play. The Blue Hose found the back of the net with 18:40 to play when Handshoe scored
unassisted. Dulaney then posted back-to-back goals before Handshoe found Meade,
who promptly converted the pass into a goal at the 12:41 mark.
Meade's
free position shot at 10:48 made the score 17-6. After a quick
score by Fresno State, PC added one last score with 3:21 to go. Dulaney connected on a pass
to Newberry, who scored for the 18th goal of the match.
The Blue
Hose will not return to action until Apr. 21, when they host Davidson in the
regular season finale. The first draw control is slated for 4 p.m.
