Bonnies Best Blue Hose on Spring Break

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. ? St. Bonaventure outscored Presbyterian College women's lacrosse 22-8 on Thursday afternoon at the 31st Street Athletic Complex.

 

Junior midfielder Jordan Newberry (Atlanta, Ga./North Springs H.S.) scored a hat trick against the Bonnies while Brittni Dulaney (Rome, Ga./Darlington School) added a pair of goals and an assist to the Blue Hose offensive effort.

 

St. Bonaventure (1-2) scored first in the first two minutes of the game, but freshman attacker Marie-Lisette Dimitrew (Greenville, S.C./Eastside H.S.) tied the score 1-1 at 20:58 off a free-position shot. The Blue Hose couldn't hold the tie for long as St. Bonnaventure's Christine Hanley netted a goal of her own off an eight-meter shot 44 seconds later, taking a 2-1 lead which would only grow throughout the remainder of the game.

 

The Bonnies scored five more goals over the ensuing seven minutes. Freshman Kirstin Stenoien (Houston, Texas/Lutheran H.S.) stopped St. Bonaventure's streak with a free-position goal at the 12:07 mark, making it 7-2. The Bonnies scored once more before junior midfielder Jenna Handshoe (Greenville, H.S./J.L. Mann H.S.) received a pass from Newberry,who won the draw control, and took it up the field for PC's third goal of the day with 7:04 left on the clock.

 

Moments later, Newberry scored a goal of her own off a pass by Dulaney to cut St. Bonaventure's lead, 10-4. The team from New York netted three more scores in the final four minutes of the half to enter halftime with a 13-4 lead.

 

St. Bonaventure started the second half with four unanswered goals, bringing its run to seven over a period of 12 minutes. Dulaney put a dent in the Bonnies' lead by scoring back-to-back goals two minutes apart, making it 17-6 and bringing her season goal total to eight. Newberry also found the back of the net twice in the second half, scoring off consecutive free position shots two minutes apart.

 

The Bonnies finished the game with a 4-0 streak to finish with a 14-goal victory. Christine Hanley and Danielle Drabin lead the team with four goals apiece.

 

Although PC was outshot 39-13, all 13 Blue Hose shots were on goal, resulting in eight goals and five saves for St. Bonaventure's pair of goalkeepers, Tori Waheibi and Victoria Morgan.

 

Handshoe led the Blue Hose by scooping up five of the team's 19 ground balls while Newberry won half of PC's 12 draw controls. The team scored on four of its six free-position attempts.

 

Freshman goalkeeper Susan England (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman H.S.) served her third complete game in goal for the Blue Hose, stopping 13 shots and grabbing one ground ball.

 

Head coach Kristina Llanes' team returns home to Old Bailey Stadium to host La Salle on Sunday at 1 p.m.
