CLINTON, S.C. ? The Presbyterian College women's
lacrosse team dropped a 20-9 game against Davidson Tuesday afternoon in the
regular season finale. The contest also marked the last home game of Alyson Whitley's
career.
The Blue
Hose end the regular season at 2-10.
Leading the
way for PC was Jordan Newberry, who netted a team-high three goals on just
three shots on goal. Kirstin Stenoien and Marie-Lisette Dimitrew both tallied
two scores apiece. Megan Woodis and Jenna Handshoe each had one
score.
Handshoe
posted a game-high three assists for a team-best four points.
Erin
McBurnette stopped six shots while Susan England made four saves for the Blue
Hose.
In her last
home game, Whitley was credited with one ground ball while playing virtually
the entire contest.
PC fell
behind 2-0 after the first four minutes, but Dimitrew made a brilliant cut,
out-maneuvering her defender and took a pass from Hanshoe. She then fired a
shot that found the back of the net, slicing the deficit in half, 2-1.
However, that was the last score for the Blue Hose over the next 13:10. During that time, the Wildcats
embarked on a 7-0 run to make the score 9-1 at that point.
After a Newberry score off a free position shot, Davidson bounced back with two
more goals.
Down by nine, Brittni Dulaney connected with Dimitrew as she notched her second
score of the day. The teams traded goals, with PC's coming off a Woodis shot,
pulling the home team within eight, 12-4, with 4:12 remaining in the opening stanza.
Handshoe was credited with the assist on the goal.
Davidson
netted four goals to end the half while totaling four more scores in a
five-goal span to start the second half. The lone goal by PC during that
stretch was by Stenoien. She tallied the first goal for either squad in the
final stanza.
Stenoien began
a 4-0 run by the Blue Hose starting at the 13:58 mark. Stenoien was fouled on a
possession, resulting in a free position shot. She calmly made a quick move and
found the back of the net to make the score 20-6.
Neither team scored a goal for eight minutes. Then, playing down a person due
to a yellow card, Handshoe hit Newberry who was racing down the field with 5:38 to play. Newberry quickly put the
ball past the keeper. Fifty-three seconds later, Handshoe beat her defender and
promptly scored.
Newberry tallied the last score of the game off a free position shot, coming
with 2:59 to play.
The Blue
Hose head to the postseason as they partake in the Independent Invitational May
1-3 at Longwood.
