Clemson, S.C. - Presbyterian College women's soccer came up
short 3-0 to Clemson on Sunday afternoon.
The Blue Hose started off well in the rainy conditions but eventually
succumb to the unrelenting Clemson offense.
PC falls to 3-5-0 on the year while Clemson improves to 3-5-0 on the
season.
"Very pleased with our effort and our competiveness today,"
said head coach Brian Purcell. "I
thought our first half of play was one of the smartest spans we've had this
season. In the second half they wore us
down and took advantage of their speed to beat us. Two unbelievable individual efforts from
Maddie Elder ended up being the difference in the match."
The Blue Hose came out of the locker room ready to play
earning the match's first two scoring opportunities as Britney Horton and Kate
Baker put shots on goal. PC also earned
the match's first corner kick inside the first 15 minutes of the match.
The defensive cover held well until in the 33rd
minute when Maddy Elder split the defense and scored her eighth goal of the
season. She was assisted by K.K. Duffy
on the play.
The second half was a different story for the Blue Hose who went two behind in the 51st
minute the PC defense conceded an own goal as the ball was misplayed into the
net.
With ten seconds remaining in the match, Clemson tallied
their third goal from Elder again. She went
free up the middle of the pitch and was able to score from the edge of the
penalty area. Lily Boleyn was credited
with the assist.
The Blue Hose defense was buoyed by a solid afternoon from
the goalkeepers who made saves on 11 Clemson shots on goal and saw 20 shots
total. Abby Young made three saves while
working the first 45 minutes. She was
replaced at the break by Sarah Beth Anderson who made eight stops while working
the final 45 minutes of the match.
"I'm very proud of our defense and keepers for their rock
solid play over the last few weeks," said Purcell. "Our defenders have rarely left the field and
been the backbone of our team."
Presbyterian College will now take a 12-day layoff before
opening conference play on October 2 on the road against VMI. The Blue Hose will also travel to play
Radford on Oct. 4 as a part of the conference opening road trip.
