ROCK HILL, S.C. -
Presbyterian College women's basketball saw an opportunity for the first Big
South Conference win of the season fall by the wayside late on Saturday afternoon
against Winthrop, falling 57-40 to the Eagles.
The Blue Hose didn't have an answer for Winthrop's hot shooting
afternoon that saw the host Eagles shoot 45.5% from the field and 45% from
downtown.
Winthrop (6-7, 1-0 BSC) went out to a 7-0 lead in the first
six minutes of the game but the Blue Hose (1-12, 0-1 BSC) stormed back to even
the total by the 10:53 mark in the game.
Another Eagle run put Winthrop up 21-14 but once again the Blue Hose
roared back to take a three point lead down the stretch in the first half.
The teams went to the break tied at 24. Dria David led the way with eight points in
the first half. She tallied nine points
overall.
Coming out of the break, PC went out to a four point lead
just three minutes after the break.
Mariah Pietrowski scored four of her nine points during the run. Amanda Mills also nailed down three of her
nine points over the stretch.
However, PC's
shooting went cold late in the period as the Blue Hose shot only 25% from the
field in the second half. The Blue Hose
also posted a second half season low with 16 points.
David grabbed a career high nine rebounds to lead the Blue
Hose in boards to go along with her five steals in the game.
The Blue Hose held onto the ball, committing only 20
turnovers, down from their season average of 26.3 turnovers per game. It is the fifth time this season PC has been
at or below 20 turnovers.
Presbyterian College will take a nine-day respite before
hosting UNC Asheville on January 11 at 7 p.m. in Clinton's Templeton Center.
