HIGH POINT, N.C. - Presbyterian College women's
soccer suffered a soaking wet 3-1 defeat to the High Point Panthers on
Wednesday night in the penultimate match of the season. PC fell behind 2-0 before Sara Simpson
(Columbia, S.C.) cut the lead to 2-1 in the 68th minute.
High Point (7-10-1,
5-2-1 BSC) went ahead in the 11th minute when Sara Ranger struck a
corner kick that went into the net. The
goal was her third of the season.
Rain was a
factor in the opening half as a deluge of precipitation made the pitch very
soggy. The rain, however, slowed for the
final quarter of an hour of the first half as the teams were given a chance to
dry out before the intermission.
PC (5-12-1,
2-6 BSC) was unable to draw even into the break despite taking six total shots,
three on goal. High Point tallied nine
shots in the half with four on target.
Rain returned
in the second half as the field was once again drenched with rain.
In the 57th
minute, Simpson took a hard shot which was partially saved initially by the HPU
goalkeeper. The ball rolled towards the
goal but was slowed by the soggy field in front of net enough that the keeper
could secure the ball.
In the 61st
minute, the Panthers doubled their advantage on another corner kick. Janay Whitaker redirected a ball from Robin
Pecoraro into the net for her first score of the season.
Simpson atoned
for her unlucky moment earlier in the half with a 68th minute
goal. Renee Ballew (Greer, S.C.) crossed
a ball from the near wing to the far post at 12 yards where Simpson headed the
ball into the net. The freshman
celebrated with a swan dive across the wet grass.
Four minutes
later, Morgan Fragapane (Baltimore, Md.) narrowly missed the equalizer as she
ripped a low shot that went just wide for a goal kick.
Late in the 78th
minute, Kelli Joline scored High Point's third goal of the match when she got
control deep in the box and scored her eighth goal of the season.
The score
would remain the same in the final ten minutes as High Point took the 3-1
victory. The Panthers outshot PC, 23-15
and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Jordan
Broadway (Chapin, S.C.) went the distance for the Blue Hose between the pipes
making six saves on the night.
PC closes out
the season on Friday night on the road against Liberty. Last year, PC drew Liberty on the final day
of the season as the Flames captured the Big South Conference Regular Season
Championship.
