CLINTON, S.C. - Presbyterian College men's
soccer suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime defeat on Tuesday evening against
UNC Asheville at Martin Stadium. PC took
the lead on 50 minutes but surrendered goals in the 84th and
ultimately the 97th minutes to take the defeat.
PC falls to
1-7-1 overall and 0-3 in league play while Asheville improves to 3-6-1 and
1-1-0 in the Big South.
In the 18th
minute stunning chance for PC came to naught as a corner kick was played across
the face of goal to the far post and Harrison Russell. The freshman volleyed the ball back across
the face of goal where Nico Fazio was there for the redirection. The sophomore was stopped only by a diving
save from Asheville's goalkeeper.
The teams went
into the intermission level at 0-0. PC
led the shots race 7-3 in the opening frame and 3-2 in corner kicks.
Just five
minutes after the restart, PC went ahead off the right boot of Paul
Gunning. Fazio played a wide ball from
the wing into the center of the box where Byron Quinatoa laid the ball off to
Gunning in space. The Scottish national
hit the shot first touch and into the net for a 1-0 Blue Hose goal.
With 15
minutes left in the match, Asheville started to ratchet up the pressure as Jake
Sides got free on a breakaway chance only to be stonewalled by PC's Andrew
Wallingford.
The equalizer
for UNCA came at the 83:51 mark as Connor Holtzinger played a corner kick out
of the box where Eli Morrow then centered back to the top of the area. Colton Paschall delivered the shot which was
partially saved by Wallingford before going across the line to level the sides
at 1-1.
The Blue Hose
had a pair of chances in the final minutes of regulation as a long-range Fazio
effort hit the crossbar and a Jonny Mercado free kick went just inches over the
crossbar.
The horn blew
to end regulation with the teams tied at 1-1.
Fazio recorded
the first shot of overtime just five minutes into the first session.
A dangerous
free kick for UNCA in the 97th minute was struck by Paschall and the
forward found the net for the second time in the match. The unassisted goal ended the match from approximately
20 yards from goal.
Wallingford
made three saves in the match while allowing a pair of goals. PC logged eight shots on goal including five
shots on target from Fazio. PC had 17
shots to UNCA's 11 while the Bulldogs earned eight corner kicks to PC's four.
