CLINTON, S.C. - Presbyterian College women's
soccer had a stellar night to post a landmark 3-0 win over UNC Asheville on
Saturday night. The win is PC's first
ever against the Bulldogs in the third meeting of the programs. The Blue Hose scored just before the halftime
break and twice in the final ten minutes to secure the victory. Prior to the match, PC unveiled new home
uniforms.
PC improves to
5-7-1 on the year and 2-1-0 in the Big South while UNC Asheville falls to
1-10-0 overall and 0-3-0 in league play.
"That was an
amazing win," said head coach Brian Purcell.
"It was awesome to score three goals but our defense played exceptionally
tonight. Our team gained confidence
throughout the match and it really showed in the result.
A shot by
Emily Boggus in the fifth minute was the first major challenge of the
match. The attempt from just a few yards
off the goal line was saved by the Asheville keeper before hitting the crossbar
and going for a corner kick.
In the final
minute before the halftime break, Lauren Snyder got the ball and made a
terrific run down the wing and made some space for herself at the edge of the
penalty area. The junior ripped a shot
from 15 yards which bested the Asheville goalkeeper for a goal. The score is Snyder's first of the season and
gave the Blue Hose an important 1-0 lead into the intermission.
In the 73rd
minute, PC had a goal disallowed due to offisdes. A cross by Lauren Snyder was mishandled by
the Asheville goalkeeper. Rebecca Miller
was on hand to strike the loose ball towards goal. The ball didn't have enough pace to cross the
line so Katie Hunter helped the ball into the net. Unfortunately for PC, she was in an offiside
position when the ball was hit by Miller.
In the 81st
minute, the Blue Hose doubled the advantage with a goal off the boot of Rebecca
Miller. The freshman tallied her second
goal as she chipped the goalkeeper from 20 yards out. She was assisted by fellow freshman Stephanie
Allen.
Just six
minutes later, PC sealed the rout with another chip-shot goal. This time the final strike came from Sara
Simpson for her first collegiate goal.
She was assisted by Miller who finishes on three points for the night.
Sarah Beth
Anderson and the entire PC defense played an exquisite 90 minute of soccer to
post their fifth shutout of the season.
Anderson made 11 saves in the match as Asheville out-shot PC, 20-16.
