ORANGEBURG,
S.C. - Presbyterian College earned a comprehensive 51-38 win over South
Carolina State on Tuesday evening to improve to 2-2 on the year and snap a
48-game road losing streak. The skid was
the nation's longest on the road and dates back to December 4, 2007 when the
Blue Hose earned a 63-62 win over SCSU in Orangeburg.
"I was really proud of our defensive effort," said head coach Ronny
Fisher. "To hold them to 32 percent
shooting took a lot of effort and I am very proud of our kids for that. Offensively we were able to get the ball
inside and knock down some open looks in the first half that helped us gain a
lead."
PC improved to 2-2 on the year while the Bulldogs drop to 1-2 on the
young season. The 38 points for Erskine was the first time since February 4, 1995 that PC held an opponent in the 30-point zone.
The Blue Hose
were led by Mariah Pietrowski's (Elizabethton, Tenn.) game-high 13-points. The sophomore was 6-for-9 from the field to
extend her league leading shooting percentage to .613.
Kristen
Stevens (Pickerington, Ohio) torched the Bulldogs in the first half for nine points. She drained three baskets from downtown in
the opening 20 minutes to give PC a 28-18 lead into the halftime intermission. The junior, however, would not score in the
second half.
Dria David
(Lawrenceville, Ga.) had six of her ten points
in the opening half. The sophomore added
11 rebounds for her third career double-double.
PC led by as many
as 19 at the 10:29 mark in the second half.
Center Shonda Burnside (Gray Court, S.C.) dumped in six of her 10 points
in the second half and had four rebounds.
PC shot .489
on the night from the field and .308 from downtown going 4-of-6 in the first
half and cooling to an 0-7 mark in the final half. The Blue Hose ruled the boards in the second
period by a 24-12 margin to take a 36-25 lead in rebounds for the game.
The Blue Hose
committed 21 turnovers, one shy of the season low which came against Erskine a
week prior. PC also took a 17-5 lead in
assists while doubling the Bulldogs for points in the paint (32-16).
PC will break
for Thanksgiving and return to the hardwood on Saturday, November 27 to face
Furman in Greenville to close out a three-game road swing. The tilt against the Paladins starts at 2
p.m.
