BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Presbyterian College women's lacrosse team was paced
by its 2009 leading scorers, but it was not enough as the Blue Hose lost 19-5
at Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon.
"I thought we responded well," head coach Kristina Llanes said. "Offensively, Jenna and Jordan had great games. They played really strong and were connecting everywhere. Overall, the team worked hard for the full game. Now that we've had our first match, we know what we need to fix for Tuesday."
The Blue Hose (0-1) were led by Jenna Handshoe and Jordan Newberry, who scored
two goals apiece while Brittni Dulaney added one. The Hokies (1-1) were guided
by Jessica Noon's five scores.
Goalkeeper Susan England scooped up a team-high three ground balls while rookie
Shannon Hartford and Anne Lamb Crosby each accounted for two. Lauren Gulledge,
Newberry and Kirstin Stenoien each forced a turnover in the contest.
After six minutes of scoreless play to open the competition, Julia Heaps opened
the scoring with a goal for the home squad. Trailing 1-0, head coach Kristina Llanes' team broke through the defense less than a minute later with a solid
scoring attack. Dulaney found Handshoe slicing toward the frame. She passed it
to her and Handshoe instinctively found the back of the net, tying the contest
at one apiece with 22:35 to go in the first half.
The Hokies were able to rattle off seven consecutive goals over the next 12
minutes of action for an 8-1 advantage. Then, the Blue Hose defense stepped up,
holding Tech at bay for a span of 7:07. During that time, Dulaney answered the
bell with an unassisted tally, bringing the count to 8-2.
The Hokies came right back, notching two scores over the final 3:49, including
one with just three seconds remaining in the half for a 10-2 lead at the break.
Trailing 15-2 at the halfway point of the second period, Newberry slammed a
shot past the keeper for a goal at the 14:30 mark. Three minutes later,
Handshoe went in and launched a shot that found the back of the net to bring
the Blue Hose within 11 at 15-4.
After Hokie goal with 8:42 to play, Newberry tallied her second goal of the day
to bring PC's scoring total to five for the afternoon. However, it was not
enough as Tech came away with the win.
For the game, PC was out-shot 39-11. England posted five saves to just three
for the Hokies. England, who had superb play between the pipes, saw the home team take 39 shots on the day. The Blue Hose were a solid 9-11 in converting clears.
PC picked up 14 ground balls while the Hokies gobbled up 28.
The Blue Hose return to action Tuesday in their home opener against Siena. The first
draw control is slated for 3 p.m.
