CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College women's tennis team dropped a 4-3
heartbreaker to Wofford on an overcast day on the home court of the Blue Hose.
PC (1-3) was paced by Olivia McMillan, who won both of her matches on the day.
The Blue Hose started off strong, winning the doubles point. Heather Heusel and
Paige Oelke teamed up to blank Haley Bird and Lindsay Larkin 8-0 at the top
spot. Although Megan Davis and Cara Caruso lost to Guinn Garcia and Beth Dyar
as the No. 2 seed, PC was still able to win the point. Virginia Waldron and
McMillan started slow, but rallied for an 8-6 victory at No. 3 to win the point
and earn the 1-0 advantage.
Top-seeded Heusel lost a hard-fought match in singles play to Sabrina Smyers
6-2, 7-5, evening the match.
PC battled back to take a slim lead after McMillan shut out Baird in straight
sets, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 slot.
The Terriers once again evened the overall score after Garcia downed Caruso at
No. 3 by a 6-0, 6-1 score. Director of Tennis Operations Patric Hynes team,
however, showed great promise as Oelke roared back from a 6-4 loss in the first
set to take the match, winning the final two sets 6-1, 6-4 over Beth Dyar at
the No. 4 position.
Wofford, however, broke through with wins at both the No. 5 and No. 6 slots to
secure the 4-3 victory. Davis fell 6-2, 6-2 to Larkin while Daryl Thompson lost
6-1,6-4 to Stephanie Cox.
The Blue Hose head to Kennesaw State tomorrow for a 1 p.m. contest.
