CLINTON, S.C. - Jenna Handshoe
netted five goals for Presbyterian College, but the Blue Hose could not
complete the comeback, falling 22-13 to Siena Tuesday afternoon.
The Blue Hose fall to 0-2 on the year while the Saints improve to 1-0.
Handhoe guided PC with five scores. Shannon Hartford and Lauren Lefeber each
scored their first career goals. Lefeber and Hartford accounted for three
points each.
Laura Meade picked up a team-high four draw controls while Erin McBurnette
accounted for a six ground balls. Handshoe scooped up a team-best nine ground
balls.
Trailing 9-1 with 15:58 to play in the opening half, the Blue Hose embarked on
a 5-1 spurt to close out the half. The scoring started for head coach Kristina
Llanes' team when Newberry found Shannon Hartford cutting through the defense
for her first career score. Liz Davis then found Jenna Handshoe for PC's third
tally of the day with 13:20 to play.
Siena countered with a goal from Erin Hepper with just over 10 minutes
remaining in the half. However, the strong
Blue Hose defense rose to the occasion, keeping the visitors off the
board for the remainder of the half.
At 6:53, Rachel Sweeney netted her first career goal after making a wonderful
juke toward the cage, pulling PC within six at 10-4. Hartford then connected
with Berkley Aiken for Aiken's first goal of the year with 3:54 remaining. Just
11 seconds later, Lauren Lefeber kicked a pass ahead to Aiken, who promptly
scooped it past the keeper, bringing the score to 10-6 to start the second
half.
PC sliced the deficit to four, 14-10, with 16:47 remaining on a goal by Handshoe
off an assist from Hartford. However, Siena ran off three straight goals before
Handshoe answered on a free position shot.
Siena was led by Caitlin Mike's seven goals and four assists in its season
opener.
The Blue Hose will host Detroit Friday at 3 p.m.
