CLINTON, S.C. - Shannon Hartford and Jenna Handshoe each scored three
points, but it was not enough for Presbyterian College as the Blue Hose fell
18-10 to Detroit Mercy.
The Blue Hose (0-3) scored a season-high 10 goals, five in each half. However,
the Titans pulled away late, scoring the last four of the game to hold on for
the win.
The Titans jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Brittni Dulaney cut the deficit in
half just 5:43 into the game. However, UDM rallied for five consecutive scores
over the next 12 minutes of action, extending the lead to 7-1.
Head coach Kristina Llanes' team fought back as the home squad went on a 4-1
spurt to close the half down three, 8-5. Hartford was fouled and calmly sank a
free position shot to start the run at 8:19. After a Titans' goal, Katie Prisco
found the back of the net, making the score 8-3. Hartford then found Prisco two
minutes later for another PC score. Then, with 12 seconds remaining in the
half, Handhsoe played a perfect pass to Kirstin Stenoien, who tallied the
score.
Although the momentum was with PC, the Titans opened the second half with three
straight goals, pushing the lead to 11-5.
Laura Meade tallied a score at the 22:42 mark off a pass from Dulaney. Two
minutes later, Handshoe passed it to Hartford, who drilled a shot for her
second goal of the afternoon.
Anna Eidem countered with back-to-back free position shots for the visitors,
pushing the lead to six, 13-7.
Llanes' squad would not go away. The resilient squad notched three of the next
four scores to pull within four at 14-10. Stenoien converted a pass from Jordan
Newberry while Meade took Liz Davis' pass for a score. Handshoe also totaled a
goal off a free position attempt.
Although she scored just one goal, Jordan Newberry corralled a team-high six
draw controls. She also forced two turnovers. Meade had four draw controls
while Susan England scooped up a team-best seven ground balls.
The Blue Hose return to action March 2 at Central Connecticut State. The draw
control is slated for 4 p.m.
