PC Drops Heartbreaker To Central Connecticut State

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - After a turnover with 14 seconds to play, rookie Shannon Hartford's shot to tie the contest was just ever so slightly high of the goal, allowing Central Connecticut State to hold on to a 14-13 victory Tuesday.

The Blue Hose (0-4) were led by Jenna Handshoe's seven points (three goals, four assists). CCSU (1-0) was paced by Michele Conway's five points on three goals and two assists.

Brittni Dulaney came off the bench to tally five points on two goals and three assists while Katie Prisco fired home three scores for the Blue Hose. Jordan Newberry chipped in two goals while Hartford (one goal, one assist) and Kirstin Stenoien (two assists) each had two points.

Berkley Aiken and Lauren Lefeber both had a goal while Liz Davis dished out an assist. On the defensive front, Melinda Vasconcellos forced five turnovers while Jill Parker scooped up four ground balls.

Between the pipes, Susan England stopped 14 shots while Erin McBurnette thwarted four.

In a fast and furious contest, CSU jumped out to a 6-1 advantage for the home squad. The lone score for PC came almost seven minutes into the game when Handshoe converted a pass from Hartford for the goal.

Stenoien hooked up with Newberry, who promptly rocketed a shot past the keeper at the 9:22 mark to make the score 6-2. CCSU then scored two of the next three goals, with the third Blue Hose tally coming from the stick of Dulaney off a pass from Davis.

Dulaney then scored with 1:08 left in the half, sparking a 3-0 run by the visitors. Handshoe was credited with the assist on her score. Then, Dulaney found Handshoe for her 10th goal of the year as 36 ticks remained on the scoreboard before intermission.

Down by just three at the break, 8-5, Newberry blasted a goal from Stenoien 2:25 into the second period.

Mackenzy Ryan's free-position shot sparked a 4-1 run by the home team, with PC's score in the run coming via Aiken from Handshoe.

After Ashley Mara's goal at the 20:41 mark, PC ran off six of the next eight goals, the last of which came from Prisco with 1:46 to play. During the run, Prisco scored all three of her goals on the day while Handshoe, Hartford and Lefeber all notched goals.

Prisco's last goal pulled the Blue Hose within one, 14-13. Lyndsey Mastandrea then won the ensuing draw control, giving CCSU the possession. The home team was able to maintain possession until Ali Roche's turnover with 14 seconds to play. PC was unable to tie the contest during the duration of the contest, giving CCSU the win.

The Blue Hose will look to get into the win column tomorrow at 7 p.m., when they travel to La Salle.
