WASHINGTON, D.C. - A well-balanced attack propelled Presbyterian College
past Howard Sunday afternoon by a 19-11 score.
With the win, PC improves to 2-7 on the season and 1-1 in the NLC. Howard falls
to 1-7 on the year and 0-3 in conference play.
Leading the way for PC was Jenna Handshoe, who accounted for four goals.
Brittni Dulaney netted four points on two goals and two assists while Jordan
Newberry (two goals, one assist) and Susie Branson (two goals, one assist) each
had three points.
Shannon Hartford blasted two goals while Jill Parker, Laura Meade, Katie
Prisco, Marie Lisette Dimitrew, Lauren Lefeber, Rachel Deighan and Lauren
Gulledge all had one goal.
Newberry led the defense with two caused turnovers. Hartford, Kirstin Stenoien
and Lefeber each had one. Stenoien also had two ground balls.
Between the pipes, Susan England stopped 14 shots to earn the win. She played
49:45 while Erin McBurnette came in for the final 10:15. McBurnette stuffed two
shot attempts.
After a quick goal by Handshoe started the scoring for the day. However, the
home team bounced back with three straight goals, two of which came from the
talented Desiree Cox.
Handshoe pulled the Blue hose within one nine minutes in only to have Cox tally
her third goal of the day two minutes later for a 4-2 advantage.
PC tied the contest with just over 16 minutes remaining in the first half after
back-to-back goals by Meade and Hartford. Ashley Lawrence put the home team
back in front just 30 seconds later.
Neither team was able to score for the next 10 minutes. Handshoe's free
position shot knotted the contest at 5-5 and kick-started an 8-0 run by the
Blue Hose that spanned 15:03 off the game clock. During the spurt, Handshoe
accounted for two goals as did Newberry and Branson to make the score 12-5.
Howard tried to get back in the game, scoring the next three goals and bringing
the home team within four. However, head coach Kristina Llanes' team was able
to keep Howard at bay as Dulaney answered the bell with back-to-back goals in
just over a minute of play. Prisco then added a goal a minute later for a 15-8
advantage.
Cox, who has had a tremendous season, tried to help the home squad get back in
it with three straight goals in a four-minute span. However, Newberry found
Dimitrew for a goal with 5:36 to play. Gulledge added her goal on a free
position shot and then PC finished the scoring with a goal from Deighan and
Parker.
The Blue Hose return to action tomorrow when they head to Annapolis, Md., to
take on Navy.
