ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Presbyterian College women's lacrosse team was unable
to overcome an eight-goal halftime deficit in the 21-4 loss to Navy Monday
afternoon.
The Blue Hose now stand at 2-8 on the year while Navy improves to 10-2.
In the loss, goalkeeper Susan England established a stadium record for her 17-save performance. The previous mark of 16 saves belonged to
Detroit Mercy's Brett Yenger, which was set Feb. 22, 2009. It is the most saves ever in the stadium - for a men's or women's game.
Senior Jenna Handshoe and Jordan Newberry each accounted for a goal and an
assist. Kirstin Stenoien and Marie-Lisette Dimitrew each accounted for a goal.
In addition to England's solid night in the goal, she also scooped up a
team-high four ground balls. Erin McBurnette tallied a team-high two caused
turnovers.
The PC defense held Navy at bay for the first 6:55 of the contest. Then, Erin
Rawlick accounted for her 48
th goal of the season off a pass from
Caitlin Mandrin Hill. Four minutes later, the home team would tack on its
second goal of the contest.
Just 34 seconds after the second goal of the game, Newberry found Handshoe
open. Handshoe then blasted a shot into the back of the net to slice the
deficit to 2-1. In a span of 6:11, Navy would score six goals for an 8-1 lead.
Handshoe then returned the favor, making a splendid pass to Newberry, who then
notched her eighth goal of the season to make the score 8-2.
Down 11-2, Stenoien was fouled in the crease, setting up a free position shot.
She calmly cut toward the goal and rocketed into the back of the net to make
the score 11-3 at the intermission.
Navy opened the second half with an 8-0 run that spanned the first 22:55. It
wasn't until Dimitrew's unassisted goal with 7:05 left to play did PC get on
the scoreboard in the final stanza. However, after the goal, the Blue Hose
defense stepped up, allowing just two goals the rest of the way.
For the game, PC scored on four of its seven shots. The team also connected on
one-of-two free position attempts while limiting Navy to just two-of-six shots.
The Blue Hose return to action Saturday at Davison. First draw control is set
for 1 p.m.
