CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Presbyterian College women's tennis team dropped a
non-conference heartbreaker to Western Carolina Friday afternoon, 4-3.
The Blue Hose now stand at 3-11 on the year while the Catamounts improve to
2-8.
PC started the match by taking the doubles point in fine fashion. Heather
Heusel and Paige Oelke bested Amanda Massey and Ainhoa Iglesias Diaz by an 8-3
count at the top spot. Second-seeded Olivia McMillan and Virginia Waldron were
unable to defeat k. Jimenez Sarmiento and Carolina Lainez, falling 8-4.
However, head coach Patric Hynes' squad was able to pick up the point after
Megan Davis and Daryl Thompson outlasted Layne Arnold and Izabella Glinska 8-5
at the No. 3 spot.
In singles play, Heusel's match against Massey finished first. Playing at the
No. 2 slot, Heusel lost a 6-4, 6-4 decision. The Catamounts took a 2-1 overall
advantage when Sarmiento downed Cara Caruso at the No. 5 position by a 6-1, 6-2
margin.
Oelke knotted the match at 2-2 when she knocked off Diaz 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 4
spot. Thompson then helped give the visitors a 3-2 advantage when she edged
Emily Turke 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
Needing just one more point to secure the overall victory, McMillan came close
to delivering. She was unable to as Glinska won the tiebreaking set 6-2.
McMillan lost the first set 6-0 before bouncing back to take the second one
7-6.
The match came down to the third position. Davis lost the first set before
regaining her momentum and beating Lainez 6-2 in the second set. Once again,
the Catamounts were able to take the tiebreaker as Davis lost 6-2 in the third
set.
PC will look to get back to their winning ways tomorrow morning when it hosts
Radford at 1 p.m.
