CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College women's lacrosse
team battled back from a four-goal halftime deficit late in the second half,
but it was not enough as the Blue Hose fell 13-10 against the Red Flash of St.
Francis.
The Blue Hose (0-6) were led by Brittni Dulaney's five
points on three goals and two assists. Jenne Handshoe had a three-point day on
two goals and an assist while Katie Prisco notched a goal and an assist and
Kirstin Stenoien had two goals.
Susie Branson, Jill Parker and Handshoe all tied for the
team lead with four ground balls while Parker forced a team-best three caused
turnovers.
Between the pipes, Susan England had 13 saves and Erin
McBurnette stopped six.
The Blue Hose jumped on top just 2:08 into the contest as
Shannon Hartford rifled a pass from Prisco past Danielle Pokusa for a 1-0
advantage. After SFU knotted the score 20 seconds later, head coach Kristina
Llanes' team went on the offensive, tallying its second goal of the day off the
stick of Dulaney for a 2-1 advantage.
The Red Flash answered with five straight goals while
keeping the Blue Hose off the scoreboard until 7:47 to play in the half.
Dulaney found a cutting Handshoe, who took one step and fired the ball into the
back of the cage to put the score at 6-3.
St. Francis scored two of the next three goals to enter
halftime with an 8-4 advantage.
After the intermission, the teams traded goals the first
five minutes, with Stenoien and Liz Davis accounting for PC's markers. On the
goal by Davis, Dulaney was credited with an assist.
Neither team could get on the clock for nearly five minutes
of play. Then, a foul in the crease gave Kate Simmons a free position shot,
which she converted for an 11-6 advantage. Four minutes later, Simmons found
Katie Jenkins for a score and a 12-6 lead.
Stenoien answered the challenge with a goal at 13:12 off a
pass from Handshoe. Simmons, however, pushed the margin back to six on another
free position shot with just over 12 minutes to play.
The solid defense of PC stepped up, keeping the visitors off
the board for the final 12 minutes of action while the offense came alive.
Prisco rocketed in a goal with 9:13 to play. Then, despite
multiple shots, the Blue Hose could not muster another goal until just under
four minutes remained in the contest. Then, Dulaney converted an unassisted
shot. With 1:57 to go, Dulaney struck again, but it was not enough in the 13-10
loss.
For the game, St. Francis accounted for 37 shots to 32 by
PC. The Red Flash picked up 41 ground balls to 30 for the Blue Hose. PC,
however, managed 19 saves to 17 by SFU.
The Blue Hose return to action on Tuesday, March 9, when
they host Bryant. The draw control is set for 3 p.m.
