CLINTON, S.C.-
Despite scoring four
goals in the final four minutes of play to tie the contest, the Presbyterian
College women's lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought 20-19 contest against
Jacksonville on a rain-soaked field on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Hose conclude the regular season at 3-12 overall and 2-4 in conference
play. The Dolphins now stand at 6-10 overall and 4-2 against league foes.
PC was led by Shannon Hartford's career-high eight points on five goals and
three assists. Jordan Newberry accounted for five goals while Kirstin Stenoien
added six points on two goals and a game-high four assists.
Katie Prisco (three goals) and Berkley Aiken (two goals) each had multi-point
performances.
At the intermission, JU held an 8-7 advantage, but the home squad out-scored
the Dolphins 7-5 in the final 23:13 of the half. After falling behind 3-0,
Kirstin Stenoein found Newberry for the team's first goal of the afternoon.
Hartford then posted the first of her goals for the day less than a minute
later after taking a brilliant pass from Katie Prisco to pull the team within
one. Senior Berkley Aiken tied the contest off a pass from Stenoien at 22:08.
The Dolphins countered with a 4-1 run to go ahead 7-4 with 12:30 to play in the
first stanza. Neither team could get a shot to connect for over six minutes
until Aiken tallied her second score of the day. At the 4:11 mark, Lauren
Lefeber connected on a free position shot. Just 20 seconds later, Marie-Lisette
Dimitrew hit Hartford for another score, tying the contest at 7-7. The visitors
tacked on a goal with 2:25 to go for the 8-7 halftime advantage.
The Dolphins went up two 1:20 into the final stanza only to have Hartford find
Newberry for a goal with 25:31 to play. The squads traded goals until Jocelyn
Jamison put the visitors up by two, 13-11, at the 13:58 mark. That goal started
a 4-1 run by the Dolphins, giving the visitors a 16-12 advantage with just 9:56
to play.
Head coach Kristina Llanes' team would not give up. The squad roared back to
tie the contest at 18-18 beginning with Stenoien's unassisted tally at the 8:35
mark.
Trailing 18-14 with under five minutes to play and in spite of the pouring
rain, PC climbed back into the contest, scoring four straight goals in a span
of 2:54.
Prisco took a pass from Lauren Lefeber for a score with 4:06 to go. Jenna
Handshoe added another score at the 3:35 mark. A minute later, Jill Parker
found dished off a beautiful pass to Katie Prisco on the right side of the
frame. Prisco promptly fired the ball past the keeper to make the score 18-17.
With 1:24 to go, Hartford notched her seventh point of the day when she was
credited with an assist on the goal by Newberry.
Jamison scored with 32 seconds to play, giving the Dolphins a 19-18 lead.
However, Hartford answered the call with a goal nine seconds later off a pass
from Stenoien, tying the contest.
After Amanda Hurley scored on a free position shot with 15 seconds to play, the
Blue Hose had one last chance. PC won the ensuing draw control and had an
attempt with just a few seconds remaining, but Parker's shot was saved,
resulting in the 20-19 win for the Dolphins.
For the game, PC notched 19-22 clears while each team won 20 draw controls. Due
to the rain, each accounted for a high number of ground balls, with the home
team being credited for 36 while the Dolphins had 32.
The Blue Hose return to action Friday at the National Lacrosse Conference
Tournament. Their opponent is still TBA as is the time for their opening-round
game.
