FARMVILLE, Va. - Katie Prisco tallied two goals in a 25-second span to
bring the Presbyterian College women's lacrosse team within one with just 1:05
to play, but it was not enough in the 17-16 loss to Detroit in the first round
of the National Lacrosse Conference Tournament.
The Blue Hose now stand at 3-13 on the season while the Titans improve to 7-10.
Prisco accounted for five points on four goals and an assist while Brittni Dulaney also chipped in with five points on two goals and three assists. Rookie
Rachel Deighan came off the bench for two goals and an assist and Jenna Handshoe netted two goals.
Melinda Vasconcellos scooped up a team-best five ground balls while Susan England, Shannon Hartford and Jill Parker all had three. Six PC
student-athletes accounted for a caused turnover apiece.
England stopped eight shots on the day.
At the break, the Blue Hose found themselves trailing 12-7, but once again head
coach Kristina Llanes' team roared back into the game thanks in part to a
second-half surge.
Just 1:25 into the final period, Hartford sliced through the defense for a
goal. Less than a minute later, Handshoe took a pass from Dulaney for another
score, pulling PC within three at 12-9.
Neither team was able to score for nearly seven minutes until Marie Lisette
Dimitrew found Deighan for a score. After the draw control, Dulaney went in
uncontested for the score, putting the game at 12-11 and ending a 4-0 run.
The Titans countered quickly, scoring two goals in the next 1:25 for a 14-11
advantage. With 18:47 remaining, Dulaney pulled PC within two at 14-12.
Detroit would score the next two goals, the second of which came with just 9:26
to play for a 16-12 margin. With the clock beginning to wind down, Llanes' team
kicked things into high gear. Freshman Lauren Lefeber's goal with 7:46 to go
made it 16-13. Then, Susie Branson put the ball in the back of the net just 32
seconds later.
Anna Eidem tacked on a goal at 6:28 for the designated home team. The Blue Hose
could not get on the board again until Dulaney found Prisco for a score with
1:30 remaining in the contest, making the score 17-15. The duo connected one
more time 25 seconds later, but the valiant comeback attempt fell just short.
After the goal, Jordan Newberry won the draw control, but turned the ball over
15 seconds later. Lindsey Saunders picked up the ground ball for the Titans and
the Blue Hose could not get the ball back, thus ending the game.
The Blue Hose return to action tomorrow night at 7 p.m. The squad will play
either Howard or Liberty.
