FARMVILLE, Va. - Senior Brittni Dulaney ended her career in fine style
Saturday evening, notching a near-school record nine points on a game-high six
goals and three assists, helping the Presbyterian College women's lacrosse team
defeat Howard by a 20-8 score in the National Lacrosse Conference Tournament.
The Blue Hose conclude the season with a 4-13 record and a fifth-place finish
at the conference tournament.
In addition to Dulaney, senior Jenna Handshoe had a superb game with four goals
on five shots. Fifth-year standout Berkley Aiken accounted for two goals in her
final collegiate contest. Kirstin Stenoien added three points on two goals and
an assist while rookie Shannon Hartford had two assists. In all, 12
student-athletes scored at least one point for head coach Kristina Llanes'
team.
Susie Branson, Jordan Newberry, Marie-Lisette Dimitrew, Lauren Lefeber, Rachel Deighan
and Katie Prisco all had a goal while Laura Meade dished out an assist.
The teams played even for the first 10:41 as each team netted three goals.
Then, after a time-out, PC reeled off a 5-0 scoring spurt for an 8-3 advantage.
During that run that took just 2:24, Dulaney scored two goals and assisted on
another. Prisco, Stenoien and Handshoe each had a goal in that span. Also,
Hartford dished out both of her assists then.
Howard's first-team all-conference selection Desiree Cox stopped the streak
with a goal at 10:59, but it wasn't enough as PC powered home four more goals
in the opening stanza. Newberry, Stenoien, Branson and Handshoe all found the
back of the net, helping the team take a 12-5 lead into intermission.
Just 37 seconds into the second half, Meade found Deighan for a goal. Three
minutes later, Lefeber broke free and rocketed a shot past the keeper for a
14-5 lead.
Ahead 14-6, Dimitrew connected on a free position shot with 23:12 remaining.
Then, neither team scored for nearly 10 minutes. Dulaney connected with Aiken
for her first of two goals at the 13:44 mark. Handshoe and Dulaney each scored,
putting the game at 18-6 with just under 10 minutes to play.
After another goal by Cox, Dulaney accounted for her last goal of the day at
3:54. Then, with 2:31 to play, Stenoien found Aiken for the team's last point
of the season. Ashlee Brown's goal with 41 seconds to play concluded the
scoring.
Branson and Megan Woodis each scooped up a team-best three ground balls. Jill Parker, Anne-Lamb Crosby, Hartford, Stenoien, Prisco, Mary Honan and Dulaney
each had two ground balls. Newberry was also quick from the start, nabbing five
of the team's 11 draw controls.
Seven of PC's goals were assisted. Of the remaining 13 scored, four were on
free position shots. For the game, the Blue Hose powered home 38 shots,
including 26 on goal.
Susan England and Erin McBurnette combined for nine saves on the day. England
had five while McBurnette accounted for four, all of which came in the second
half. The transition game worked tremendously for Llanes' squad as the team
attempted and made all 13 clears.
PC picked up 27 ground balls to 18 for Howard. The team also forced seven
turnovers while only being forced into five.
