CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College women's basketball picked up their second Big South victory of the season against the Winthrop Eagles on Monday night. The Blue Hose took over the second half and claimed their second straight win over the Eagles by a score of 55-40.
During the second half, PC shot six-of-seven from three-point land and was perfect from the charity stripe. Karlee Taylor (Asheville, N.C.) was a perfect five-of-five on the night. The freshman went four-of-four from three-point land for a career night of 14 points. Also having a good night was sophomore Chelsea Parker (Asheville, N.C.) who went three-of-four from the field with seven points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Dria David (Lawrenceville, Ga.) went four-of-four from the charity stripe, all in the second half, to end the game with seven points and eight assists.
Winthrop's Ashley Cox led the Eagles with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Dequesha McClanahan was held to only seven points and five rebounds after leading Winthrop in scoring all season.
For the game, PC committed only 13 turnovers compared to Winthrop's 14. It was the lowest number of turnovers all season for the Blue Hose. PC, ranked second in the Big South's scoring defense, held the Eagles to their second-lowest performance of the year and nearly 14 points below their average.
During the first half, both teams alternated taking the lead. Winthrop would lead by as many as five points with 12:28 remaining. PC would lead by as many as four with 4:17 left in the opening half before taking a 21-18 lead into the locker room. Mariah Pietrowski (Elizabethton, Tenn.) led the Blue Hose with three-of-four shooting, six points, and four rebounds. As a team, PC only had six turnovers in the first half compared to Winthrop's eight.
The victory improves PC to 5-11 and 2-2 in the Big South while Winthrop falls to 8-8, 2-2. The Blue Hose have tied the school record for wins since moving to Division I and gave Coach Ronny Fisher his 14th win as a head coach.
The Blue Hose will next play at Radford on Saturday, Jan. 22. The tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Dedmon Center.
