CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College women's basketball team fell at home on Saturday evening to the High Point Panthers by a score of 56-41. High Point opened the second half with a 9-2 run and never looked back as they went on to win by 15 points.
Mariah Pietrowski (Elizabethton, Tenn.) scored 17 points on eight of 12 shooting while also pulling down six rebounds to lead the Blue Hose in both categories. The sophomore fell two points shy of her season high of 19 that she recorded in the games against Erskine and Ohio.
Sherece Smith (Clemson, S.C.) recorded six points in a career high 28 minutes of game time. Smith also had four rebounds and one steal. For the game, the Blue Hose shot 33.3 percent from the field (16-48) and had a below average night from beyond the arc (2-17, 11.8 percent).
Shamia Brown had 11 points and LaTeisha Dean 10 points to lead the High Point offense. Amy Dodd had eight rebounds to lead the Panthers, while Cheyenne Parker contributed seven points, three steals, and three blocks.
The Panthers recorded 21 points off turnovers and found 24 points coming from its bench. High Point committed 17 turnovers compared to PC's 19. It was only the second time in the last five games that PC has kept its turnovers under 20.
High Point got out to an 8-0 lead before Devin Fothergill (Somerset, Ky.) scored the first points for the Blue Hose. Pietrowski contributed her first bucket on the very next play, cutting the lead back down to four points during the first media timeout.
After a Blue Hose free throw, High Point went on a 9-0 run extending the lead back to 17-5. Pietrowksi scored the next five points of the game, bringing the home team back to within seven at 17-10.
After a pair of quick baskets by the visitors, the Blue Hose went on a 9-2 run over the next three minutes. Kristen Stevens (Pickerington, Ohio) scored her first two points followed by threes by Amanda Mills (Oregon City, Ore.) and David. Shonda Burnside (Gray Court, S.C.) scored her only point of the night on a free throw to bring the Blue Hose within six, 25-19, with just 3:07 on the clock. It was the closest PC would get as High Point ended the half on an 8-3 run to enter the locker room up by a score of 33-22.
PC falls to (5-14, 2-5) while High Point improves to (10-10, 4-3).
The Blue Hose will next play at home on Monday night against UNC Asheville. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
