CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College men's tennis team enjoyed a pair of wins on Saturday in fall action, downing Newberry, 5-2, before dispatching Pfeiffer, 7-0.

"We got to play a lot of really good matches today," said head coach Adam Herendeen. "I am really pleased with our improvement throughout the day. We have put a lot of work into our doubles and it paid off today."

Rafael Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany), Nathan Crocker (Clinton, S.C.), Ryan Walters (Augusta, Ga.) and Zachary Sprouse (Hilton Head, S.C.) each won both of their singles contests.

In the morning's matchup against Newberry, the Blue Hose swept the Wolves in doubles before winning four of six singles matches.

Grayson Mills (Lilburn, Ga.) and Berghaus knocked off Mike Saunders and Cal Loveridge, 8-2, while Edward Snead IV (Greenwood, S.C.) and Sprouse handled Mohammed Chakir and David Sons, 8-5. PC put an exclamation mark on the doubles point as Crocker and Walters grabbed an 8-3 win over Jeff Kiser and Jay Bethea.

In singles play, Mills battled Saunders in a weighty top-flight match. Saunders nipped Mills in the first set, 7-6, before Mills responded with a 6-3 victory in set number two. Mills nearly pulled out a win in the final set, but Saunders eked out a narrow 11-9 victory to win the match.

Berghaus rolled to a 6-2, 7-6 win against Chakir in the second flight and Sprouse earned a win at the fourth flight over Carlos Nicolopulos, 6-1, 7-6.

Snead dropped a match at No. 3 to Loveridge, 6-3, 7-6, but the Blue Hose continued to pick up wins as Crocker cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Sons and Walters downed Kiser, 6-3, 6-0.

The Blue Hose then took a break and returned to the courts for an afternoon dual against Pfeiffer.

The top two PC doubles pairs earned identical 8-3 wins as Berghaus and Mills topped Ben Hunter and Sebastian Wernecke at the top flight while Snead and Sprouse dispatched Luis Villalta and Mark Henry. At No. 3, Crocker and Walters blanked Ethan Lyon and Stephen Miller in a convincing victory, 8-0.

In singles play, Berghaus knocked off Hunter at the top flight, grabbing a 6-1 win and following up with a 6-0 set to seal it. Mills handled Wernecke at No. 2, 6-3, 6-0, and Sprouse came up with his second win of the day in a 6-3, 6-3 effort over Villalta.

PC kept up the wins in the final three flights. Snead cruised past Lyon, 6-2, 6-1, and Crocker racked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Miller. At No. 6, Walters held Williams off the board, putting a bow on the day with a 6-0, 6-0 win.

The Blue Hose return to action next weekend at the Winthrop Fall Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C.
