CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College women's basketball team held Allen to a Division I-era best five points in the second half to pick up its first win of the season with a 65-28 victory over the Yellow Jackets in Templeton Center on Thursday night.
PC improves to 1-2 on the year. The Blue Hose head to South Carolina State next on Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off in Orangeburg.
PC led 43-23 at halftime and outscored Allen by a 22-5 margin in the final period to pull away for the win.
The Blue Hose received scoring from throughout their lineup, led by Karlee Taylor's (Asheville, N.C.) game-high 13 points. Kristen Stevens (Pickerington, Ohio) followed with 12 points and Shonda Burnside (Gray Court, S.C.) contributed nine points as well.
PC out-rebounded Allen 40-30, including a 19-six advantage on the offensive glass. The Blue Hose also forced a season-high 33 turnovers while committing a season-low nine.
Megan Schaaf (Ellicott City, Md.) led PC with a career-high seven rebounds. Three PC players tallied six rebounds on the night as Mariah Pietrowski (Elizabethton, Tenn.), Sherece Smith (Clemson, S.C.) and Dria David (Lawrenceville, Ga.) each collected six boards. David also tied a career high with eight assists.
PC held Allen to 25 percent shooting on the night and only one field goal in the second half out of 18 attempted. The home team's defense forced 18 turnovers and blocked four shots in the second half, including a career-high two from Schaaf. Pietrowski also set a new career high with four steals in the win.
Shuntavia Coleman led Allen with 10 points, all in the first half.
The Blue Hose opened the game with a 9-0 run and built on its lead throughout the first stanza, eventually leading by 22 in the final minute of the first half. PC's offense came out firing, tallying 40 field goal attempts and connecting on 45 percent of them.
PC took advantage of Yellow Jacket mistakes early, scoring 21 points off of turnovers and 20 second chance points to take a 43-23 lead into halftime.
The Blue Hose charged out of the gates in the second half, scoring nine points-five by David-in the first two minutes and expanding the lead to 31 with 11:45 remaining in the game.
Allen's only field goal came 3:29 into the second half and PC continued to work on offense, evidenced by a smooth play late in the second half as Pietrowski stole the ball and sent an outlet pass to David, who pulled up on the fastbreak and dished to Fothergill under the basket for two points.
Noelle Carter (Neptune, N.J.) also provided a highlight late as she found Schaaf in transition for another Blue Hose layup.
