Blue Hose Kick off Season with #11 Vanderbilt

Women's Lacrosse Presbyterian College Athletics

PC Falls 18-8 to Virginia Tech

Ryan Rotanz scored four goals, while Morgan Widlake added three to lead the Virginia Tech Hokies to the 18-8 win over Presbyterian College in women's lacrosse action in front of 116 fans at Old Bailey Stadium in Clinton, S.C.

PC (0-2) outscored the Hokies (2-0) 6-5 in the second half but could not overcome a 13-2 deficit from the first to fall for the second time this season.

Widlake scored the game's first goal, off a free possession shot 1:54 into the first period.  After another Virginia Tech goal Presbyterian got on the board as Brianne Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio) made a free position goal 7:02 in.

The Hokies rattled off the next 11 unanswered goals and built a 13-2 lead at intermission.  Highlighting the Virginia Tech effort in the first half was four goals by Rotanz.  Anne-Marie Smith (Maitland, Fla.) provided PC with its second goal of the half just six seconds from break at 29:54.

Katie Prisco (West Babylon, N.Y.) and Laura Meade (Acworth, Ga.) scored within 28 seconds of each other (7:59 and 8:29, respectively) to begin the second half, with Shannon Hartford tacking on another one just 28 seconds after a VT goal, and the Blue Hose trailed by nine, 14-5, at the 15:59 mark.  That would be as close as PC would get as Virginia Tech scored the next four of five goals to build the lead to 12, 18-6, with just under 10 minutes to go.

Catherine Ellis (Charlotte, N.C.) and Prisco added goals at the end of the half to bring the final tally to 18-8 in favor of the Hokies.

Hartford and Prisco each had two goals to lead PC, while Rotanz and Widlake paced the Hokies with four and three goals, respectively.

Susan England (Bethesda, Md.) had 14 saves and took the loss for PC, while Alex Gale picked up the win.

Virginia Tech out-shot the Blue Hose 45-18 and was four-of-five in free-position shots, compared to a one-for-two performance by PC.

PC is next in action Saturday, Feb. 26 at Howard.  Game time is set for 3 p.m.
