CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College women's basketball team fell at home tonight to Radford by a score of 78-71. The Highlanders' Da'Naria Erwin-Spencer had a game-high 30 points to lead the visitors to victory in the last home game of the season for the Blue Hose.
Radford started the game with a 10-0 run and forced a timeout by head coach Ronny Fisher. After that, PC replied with four unanswered points by sophomore Mariah Pietrowski (Elizabethton, Tenn.). However, the Highlanders would then have an 8-2 run and push the lead back to 18-6 with 13:08 remaining in the first half.
Freshman Chelsea Apke (Pittsburg, Pa.) scored a jumper that sparked a 9-2 run by the Blue Hose that brought the home team back to within five points, 20-15, after another jumper by Pietrowski with 9:33 remaining in the first half.
The two teams would trade points down the stretch. PC would get within two points, at 30-28, after freshman Karlee Taylor (Asheville, N.C.) connected on a pair of free throws. The 11-4 run saw three points for senior Amanda Mills (Oregon City, Ore.), four free-throws for Taylor, a free throw for Pietrowski, and a big three by junior Kristen Stevens (Pickerington, Ohio). With 1:25 remaining in the first half, PC had erased the visitors' lead and were within a basket.
Radford, however, scored the last points of the half, and took a 32-28 lead into the locker room. The Highlanders shot 42 percent in the first half compared to PC's 37 percent. The Blue Hose held a slight lead, 20-16, on rebounds.
The Highlanders managed to push the lead back to 10 points at two occasions in the opening minutes of the second half. Brooke McElroy hit a jumper with 17:00 on the clock to set the score at 42-32. After trading baskets, sophomore Shonda Burnside (Gray Court, S.C.) scored 7 points for the Blue Hose in a 90 second span. Erwin-Spencer hit a three during the run, and PC was again within five points, 48-43, with 13:15 left in the game.
Freshman Sherece Smith (Clemson, S.C.) made three-of-four free throws before Taylor drained a three with 11:48 on the clock and gave the Blue Hose their first lead of the night at 49-48. Radford replied with a three of their own by Denay Wood.
Pietrowski tied the game for the last time with a pair of free throws with 11:12 remaining. The Highlanders managed to answer the call, and PC was never closer than three points for the remainder of the game.
Pietrowski led the Blue Hose with a season-high 22 points in 27 minutes of playing time. Taylor went 3-4 from three-point land to score 15 points. Smith narrowly missed a second-straight double-double by ending with 9 points and 7 rebounds. She also added four assists and two steals.
The Highlanders were led by Erwin-Spencer's game-high 30 points. Four others scored in double figures with McElroy at 13, Victoria Hamilton at 10, and Wood chipping in 10.
PC falls to 9-19 (5-10 Big South) with the loss. Radford improves to 13-14 (10-4 Big South) and secures second place in the conference standings.
The Blue Hose will travel to Liberty for the final game of the season on March 7. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
