CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's lacrosse team scored nine goals against the Longwood Lancers on Friday afternoon but fell to the visitors, 20-9. Prior to the game, the team honored members of the PC faculty that made a difference in the student-athletes' academic experiences.
PC moves to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in National Lacrosse Conference action. Longwood improves to 8-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
The Blue Hose collected 21 balls to the Lancers' 17 and controlled 15 out of the game's 31 draws.
Shannon Hartford (Georgetown, Mass.) led the team with four points on two goals and two assists. Katie Prisco (West Babylon, N.C.) scored the first hat trick of the season while Catherine Ellis (Charlotte, N.C.) added three points thanks to two goals and an assist.
Ellis led the team in draw controls, with four. Three PC players recorded three ground balls including Liz Davis (Alpharetta, Ga.), who also led the team with three caused turnovers.
Longwood scored the first six goals of the match before Prisco put PC on the board with an unassisted goal 7:29 after the opening draw.
The Lancers answered with one but the Blue Hose found the next two. Lauren Lefeber (Waxhaw, N.C.) tallied her seventh of the season before Laura Meade (Acworth, Ga.) converted a Hartford feed to make the score 7-3.
PC scored twice more before halftime. Prisco added her second of the game with 2:12 before the break and Ellis took a pass from Hartford in and scored just 25 seconds later.
The Blue Hose trailed 13-5 at the half but Hartford wasted little time cutting into the deficit with the game's first goal of the second half. The sophomore received help from Ellis and beat goalkeeper Juli Liebig for her first of the game.
PC scored three of the game's five final goals down the stretch. Hartford struck again for her second after five Longwood goals to tally her team-leading 20th goal of the season with 11:39 to go.
Ellis found the back of the net on an unassisted chance past replacement goalkeeper Alicia McCarty on her 13th of the year before Prisco completed the hat trick with 4:22 before the final whistle.
PC returns to action on Sunday when the Blue Hose host Liberty in National Lacrosse Conference action. The opening draw is slated for 3 p.m.
