DAVIDSON, N.C. – Down by four goals at halftime to the Detroit
Mercy Titans, the Presbyterian College women's lacrosse team scored 13 times in
the second half in a National Lacrosse Conference Tournament consolation match to come away
with a historic 18-17 win.
PC finishes the year at 5-13, setting a new record for wins
in the Division I era under head coach Kristina Llanes. Detroit wraps its season at 4-14.
The Blue Hose rallied from a 9-5 deficit at halftime with a
nine-goal run to open the second half en route to 13 goals in the period. The
win marks the first win against Detroit in the last six attempts and the third NLC
Tournament win in program history.
Lauren Lefeber (Waxhaw, N.C.) set a new career-high with four
goals to lead the Blue Hose in scoring. Catherine Ellis (Charlotte, N.C.) also
boasted a hat trick and four PC players posted two goals, part of nine
different members of the Blue Hose to score on the day. Ellis also controlled a team-high seven draws in the game.
Goalkeeper Susan England (Bethesda, Md.) made 13 saves,
including several stops that limited Detroit to 6-of-13 on free position shots.
One free-position save came in the final minute of the game on a chance that
would have pulled the Titans within one. England, Liz Davis (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Melina Vasconcellos (Waxhaw, N.C.) led the squad with three ground balls.
Down 9-5 at the half, the Blue Hose wasted little time opening up the scoring the
second half, scoring the first nine goals of the stanza and taking a 14-9 lead
after the first 10 minutes.
A free position attempt 33 seconds into the frame set up Hartford
to assist Kirstin Stenoien (Houston, Texas) for a PC goal that cut the Detroit
lead to three, 9-6.
Ellis completed a hat trick on her third goal of the day,
coming 2:19 after the second half began on a Jaime Beamish (Memphis, Tenn.)
assist. Two more goals from Shannon Hartford (Georgetown, Mass.) and Lefeber erased the Titans' advantage
and brought the two sides square with 26:25 left to play.
Lefeber tacked on another one for her first hat trick of the
season less than a minute later, cutting in close on a Renee Blais (Alpharetta,
Ga.) assist to give PC its first lead of the day, 10-9.
The run continued as Brianne Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio) found the net for the first time
on Saturday, blowing a shot by Valentine on a free position attempt to extend
the Blue Hose lead to two, 11-9. Ward scored again less than three minutes
later from another free position shot to put PC up three, 12-9.
Laura Meade (Acworth, Ga.) then joined in on the scoresheet,
cutting to the left side of the net and taking a high shot that grazed a few
Detroit sticks on its way into the top of the net. The goal marked the eighth
straight for the Blue Hose
Katie Prisco (West Babylon, N.Y.) finished off the run by way of her second goal of the
day to put PC ahead by five, 14-9, ending a scoring streak that spanned nine
goals and 9:53 of game time.
Detroit halted the run thanks to an Emily Boissonneault goal,
followed by a Titans free position goal with 14:14 remaining to make the score
14-11 in favor of the Blue Hose.
PC put an end to Detroit's possible rally as Lefeber struck
for the fourth time, extending her season-high and restoring the team's
advantage to four.
The teams swapped a goal apiece as Beamish posted her first
goal of the day after a Detroit score. Beamish's tally pushed PC back to a
four-goal lead and sparked another run for the seventh-seeded team.
Stenoien connected on her second of the day with 10:53 remaining
and Davis scored her third of the season 34 seconds later
to give the Blue Hose their biggest lead of the contest, 18-12.
Detroit began to close the gap, scoring five straight goals to
pull within one with 41.5 seconds left. A crucial draw control helped PC seal
the win, 18-17.
PC controlled 22 draws to Detroit's 15 and collected 20 ground balls to the Titans' 19. Both sides tallied 40 shots.
Detroit drew first blood, scoring 3:32 after the opening
draw despite three shots on goal from the Blue Hose. The Titans added two more
in the first nine and a half minutes before PC answered.
With 20:27 left in the first half, Ward sent a pass from behind the right post to a waiting Prisco, who sent a bouncing shot into the net for her 20th
goal of the season and brought the Blue Hose within two, 3-1.
A Titans goal put Detroit back up by three but PC would
respond with a three-goal rally to pull even. Ellis drew a foul on her way to
the net and received a free position opportunity. The freshman wound up and
fired a shot high that beat Detroit goalkeeper Alycsa Valentine to cut the lead
in half, 4-2.
Lefeber notched her ninth of the year 55 seconds later to
narrow the gap to one. Lefeber's high shot from in close found the twine to make
the score 4-3 with 15:02 left in the first half.
Hartford completed the rally
three minutes after Lefeber's score to tie up the game at 4-4. Meade sprinted
upfield and lobbed a pass to Hartford in front of the net where the sophomore
converted her chance. The goal marked Hartford's 27th of the year.
A Boissonneault goal for Detroit broke the deadlock
and the Titans added two more to take a 7-4 lead as the half wound down.
PC wasn't finished scoring in the first half, however, as Ellis
notched her second of the game on an impressive individual effort with 3:44
before the halftime whistle. Ellis launched a shot into the far right side of
the net after a twisting, turning effort to get past the defense guarding the
goal and brought PC within one, 7-5.
A pair of Detroit goals made the score 9-5 for the Titans at
halftime, setting up PC's milestone run.
