CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer
team earned its second straight shutout victory with a 1-0 road blanking of The
Citadel on Tuesday, thanks in part to a second-half goal from Stephanie Allen
(Augusta, Ga.) and eight saves from goalkeeper Sarah Beth Anderson (Grayson,
Ga.).
PC improves to 2-7-0 on the year. The Citadel moves to
2-5-1.
Despite an overall shot deficit of 33 to 13, PC limited the
Bulldogs' scoring chances and took advantage of a timely goal in the 63rd
minute from the sophomore Allen.
Tied at 0-0, Taylor Patti (Clover, S.C.) played a ball to
freshman Gracie Boswell (Simpsonville, S.C.). Boswell then fed Allen, who
launched a rocket from 30 yards out that beat Citadel goalkeeper Laura Serafino
high. The score marked Allen's first of the year and gave the
Blue Hose a 1-0 lead.
Patti's assist also gave the freshman her first collegiate point.
In goal for PC, Anderson made a season-high eight saves—six
in the first half—to earn her second straight clean sheet. The stops also move her
into sole possession of PC's career saves record, overtaking Emily Campbell.
Anderson currently stands at 222 saves.
O'Neill led the team with three total shots. Allen's two
shots on goal led the team in that category.
The Citadel tallied 23 shots in the first half and replaced
starting goalkeeper Whitney Nave with Serafino at the halftime break.
Allen put PC's first chance on net in the match's 28th
minute but Nave made the save.
Anderson found herself busy midway through the opening
frame, stopping three shots in the span of three minutes. Her six first-half
saves matched her season high, set in 90 minutes against South Alabama.
The teams entered halftime tied at 0-0 but the second half told
a different story on both sides of the field. PC recorded nine shots in the
final frame, just one shy of The Citadel, and edged the Bulldogs in second-half
corner kicks, three to two. PC also put five shots on goal to The Citadel's
two.
The first shot on goal after the break came seven seconds in
from Boggus. Patti and Sara Simpson (Columbia, S.C.) also
fired chances on net, but solid defensive work from the Blue Hose proved that
Allen's successful shot would be all PC would need for the win.
The Blue Hose begin Big South Conference play in their next
game on Thursday, September 29, against Radford. The match is slated to begin
at 7 p.m. in Radford, Va.
