RADFORD, Va. – The Presbyterian College women's basketball
team ended its two-game trip to Virginia with a loss to Radford at
the Dedmon Center on Monday night, 53-29.
PC moves to 8-10 overall and 2-5 in the Big South. Radford
improves to 8-10 on the year and 2-5 in conference action.
Dria David (Lawrenceville, Ga.) led the Blue Hose with 12
points on the night, scoring six in each half. Sherece Smith (Clemson, S.C.)
paced the squad on the boards, pulling down six rebounds. The game marked the
six time in seven games the sophomore collected five or more rebounds.
Despite a slow night on the offensive end, the Blue Hose
forced 20 Radford turnovers and Chelsea Parker (Asheville, N.C.) blocked two
shots and grabbed four steals, both game-highs and career-bests for the junior.
Ashley Buckhannon led Radford with 17 points.
Unfortunately for the visitors, the Blue Hose turned the ball over a season-high 25 times
thanks to 20 Radford steals, the most for opponent playing PC in 2011-12.
PC stumbled in the first half despite a promising start. After
a 5-0 Radford lead and a following PC timeout, the Blue Hose scored six
straight points thanks to Mariah Pietrowski (Elizabethton, Tenn.) and David to grab
an early 6-5 lead.
The Highlanders applied pressure, however, and strung
together a 10-0 run en route to outscoring PC 24-6 the rest of the half. The Radford
defense forced 13 PC turnovers and a Blue Hose shooting percentage of 19.2
percent (5-for-26) over the opening 20 minutes, though PC's defense helped
create 10 Radford turnovers as well.
The Blue Hose improved their shooting
to 33.3 percent (7-for-21) in the second half and received baskets from Noelle
Carter (Neptune, N.J.) and Olivia Towers-Solis (Dacula, Ga.) off the bench.
Pietrowski dished out two assists in the period to give her three in the game,
matching a season-high for her.
Pietrowski and David combined
early in the second to put PC points on the board, but the Blue Hose struggled
to find chances as time wound down and Radford took the win, 53-29.
PC returns to action on Saturday against Campbell at 5 p.m.
The game will kick off a Blue Hose doubleheader, with the men's team taking on
Charleston Southern at 7:30. Both games can be seen on the Big South Network
for a nominal fee and free audio will be available on GoBlueHose.com.
